Overview: The Shipboard General Laborer / Firewatch assists electrical and industrial team personnel in ship repair, maintenance, and overhaul operations by performing general labor tasks, maintaining a safe work environment, and providing fire watch support during hot work operations. The position requires adherence to strict safety protocols and the ability to work effectively in shipyard and onboard environments (including confined spaces, heights, and varying weather conditions).

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
General Laborer Duties:
- Perform general cleaning, surface preparation, and equipment setup in shipboard and pier-side work areas.
- Assist skilled trades (welders, pipefitters, electricians, machinists, etc.) by transporting tools, materials, and supplies.
- Remove trash, scrap, and debris to maintain a clean and hazard-free work environment.
- Operate basic hand and power tools as directed.
- Load and unload materials and equipment safely.
- Support the staging and movement of equipment in designated areas.
- Follow all company, shipyard and Navy safety policies and procedures.
Firewatch Duties:
- Maintain vigilant observation for fires or sparks during hot work operations (welding, cutting, grinding).
- Ensure that all required fire prevention equipment (extinguishers, water hoses, blankets, etc.) is available and functional prior to starting work.
- Immediately take appropriate action (such as extinguishing sparks or calling for emergency response) if unsafe conditions develop.
- Maintain communication with the hot work operator and safety personnel throughout the operation.
- Remain on duty until the completion of hot work and designated "cool-down" period to ensure no smoldering or reignition occurs.
- Complete all required safety forms, permits, and checklists accurately.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) preferred.
- Prior experience in shipyard, industrial, or construction environments preferred.
- Firewatch or OSHA Hot Work certification preferred (training may be provided).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Basic understanding of shipyard safety and fire prevention practices.
- Ability to recognize hazards and report unsafe conditions.
- Physically able to climb ladders, enter confined spaces, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work in varied environments (heat, noise, confined spaces, heights).
- Must be reliable, punctual, and able to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Must maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE) and enforce safe work practices.
Work Environment:
- Work is primarily performed aboard naval vessels, in dry docks, and on piers.
- Environment may include confined spaces, heights, ladders, scaffolding, and open decks.
- Exposure to noise, heat, dust, fumes, and moving machinery is common.
Certificates and Training (Preferred or Required):
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Shipyard Industry Safety Card (Preferred)
- Firewatch / Hot Work Safety Certification (Preferred)
- Basic First Aid / CPR (Preferred)
