Solidus is hiring a Software Engineer to evaluate advanced software systems for an on-site role based in Albuquerque, NM at Kirtland Airforce Base. This position will provide subject-matter expertise in support of the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC) Nuclear Certification Team, focusing on the technical evaluation of software and software interfaces for suitability for nuclear certification. This role is analytical and evaluative, not developmental. The engineer will assess existing software systems, documentation, interfaces, and processes to determine compliance with nuclear safety, security, reliability, and certification requirements.
The position does not involve architecting, designing, or writing production code. Instead, the role emphasizes independent technical judgment, standards compliance, risk identification, and support to formal nuclear certification decisions.

Day in the Life
- Evaluate existing software applications, embedded systems, and software-enabled interfaces used in nuclear-related systems for nuclear certification suitability
- Review software artifacts including:
- Requirements and specifications
- Design documentation
- Verification & validation (V&V) evidence
- Test procedures and results
- Configuration management records
- Assess software behavior and interfaces for:
- Safety and surety
- Determinism and reliability
- Fault tolerance and failure modes
- Cybersecurity impacts to nuclear certification
- Identify technical risks, gaps, and non-compliances related to nuclear certification criteria
- Support certification activities by:
- Preparing technical assessments and reports
- Providing recommendations to AFNWC leadership and certification authorities
- Participating in technical reviews, boards, and audits
- Interface with system engineers, software developers, program offices, and safety organizations to clarify design intent and operational behavior
- Ensure evaluations align with applicable DoD, Air Force, and nuclear enterprise standards and policies
- Support continuous improvement of software evaluation processes within the nuclear certification framework
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field
- Experience in software engineering, software assurance, or software systems evaluation
- Demonstrated experience evaluating existing software systems, rather than developing new software
- Strong understanding of:
- Software lifecycle processes
- Software assurance and quality practices
- Interface definition and integration
- Ability to analyze complex technical documentation and translate findings into clear, defensible assessments
- Strong written and verbal communication skills suitable for formal technical and certification documentation
- Cultural fit amongst a collaborative team environment
- Active Top Secret clearance or higher
- Experience with CAMEO
- Experience supporting nuclear, weapons, aerospace, or other safety-critical programs
- Familiarity with nuclear certification, nuclear surety, or nuclear safety processes
- Experience with DoD or Air Force acquisition and certification environments
- Knowledge of:
- Software safety standards
- Secure or embedded systems
- Configuration management and change control
- Previous work with AFNWC, AFGSC, NNSA, or related organizations
- High attention to detail and disciplined engineering judgment
- Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams in a controlled, regulated environment
- Emphasis on risk identification, compliance, and defensible technical conclusions
