Summary: Seeking a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to design technical reference architectures for edge computing in Disconnected, Denied, Intermittent, and Limited (DDIL) environments. The role focuses on enabling the modernisation of IT systems so they can operate autonomously at the edge and synchronise with enterprise systems when connectivity is available.
This role requires deep expertise in cloud–edge architectures, offline-first system design, and distributed systems, with a strong focus on enabling mission-critical capabilities at the tactical and operational edge. The SME will work with government stakeholders, system owners, and engineering teams to translate operational requirements into scalable, secure, and resilient edge computing architectures that function independently of continuous cloud or network connectivity.
Key Responsibilities
· Design and document technical reference architectures for edge computing in DDIL environments, including:
o Compute, storage, networking, and platform services
o Data synchronisation, consistency, and reconciliation patterns
o Security, identity, and trust models suitable for disconnected operations
· Establish architectural principles that prioritise offline-first operation, local authority and autonomy, and eventual consistency and store-and-forward patterns
· Develop reusable architectural views, diagrams, and design artifacts suitable for enterprise and program-level adoption
· Analyze existing legacy IT systems (monolithic, client-server, centralized architectures) and define modernization pathways to edge-capable architectures and refactoring, re-platforming, or encapsulation strategies
· Translate operational and mission requirements into technical designs that function under prolonged network outages, high latency and low bandwidth, and intermittent or opportunistic connectivity
· Define architectural patterns for local data persistence and system-of-record behavior at the edge, deferred synchronization and conflict resolution, and graceful degradation and fail-safe operations
· Evaluate and recommend edge platforms and technologies, including lightweight container orchestration, edge data stores and object storage, and messaging and synchronization frameworks
· Provide guidance on DevSecOps pipelines and lifecycle management for edge-deployed systems
· Define security architectures that operate without continuous access to centralized identity or cloud services, including local authentication and authorization model, credential lifecycle management in disconnected environments, and data protection and encryption at rest and in transit
· Serve as a technical advisor to program and engineering teams
· Communicate complex architectural concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
· Support architecture reviews, technical interchange meetings, and design approvals
