Where You’ll Work:
The Y12 National Security Complex located in Oak Ridge, TN, plays a vital role in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Nuclear Security Enterprise. Y-12 provides manufacturing, technical, and scientific expertise to produce components, subassemblies, and quality evaluations to sustain a U.S. nuclear deterrent; reduce the threat from weapons of mass destruction; supply nuclear material to the Naval Reactors Program; and provide solutions to other emerging national security challenges. Y-12 has developed state-of-the-art capabilities in three core areas: nuclear technology and materials, security and consequence management, and manufacturing and technical services. Y-12 lends its specialized expertise to other federal agencies, such as the U.S. Departments of Defense and Homeland Security, state and local governments, and private-sector companies. Projects at Y-12 include providing protective equipment to soldiers in combat, training National Guard units for radiological emergencies, and creating machining platforms that improve production and efficiency.

About the Role:
As a Structural Engineer, you will be responsible for developing high quality detailed design packages, provide engineering procurement and field technical support to implement those designs, and provide expertise for troubleshooting and technical assessments of plant facilities. Design involves the preparation of conceptual engineering deliverables such as cost-estimating bills of material and man-hour estimates, statements of work, design criteria, and design engineering deliverables.
Responsibilities:
Effectively and cooperatively work as a team member of an integrated project team, or as a technical lead for a multi-discipline task and routinely provide input to system engineers and other plant customers.
Routinely perform walkdowns in the existing plant facilities in order to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel.
Must possess technical expertise and wide applicating of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the field of Structural Engineering.
Provide self-performed technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems through the application of established engineering practices, codes, and standards.
Perform building evaluations and modifications, seismic analyses and rehab, oversight of outside engineering firms, steel and concrete design, and machine installations.
Must be proficient with developing structural drawings (plans, sections and details) for various materials of construction (steel, concrete, cold-formed steel), structural calculations, equipment anchorage, report preparation, drafting (or oversight of drafting), and preparation of construction specifications (generally in the form of general notes on the drawings).
Must be familiar with consensus design codes. CAD drafting experience not required but preferred, along with any 3D modeling experience. Structural modeling experience with STAAD.Pro is also preferred.
Must have the ability to plan, self-perform, and/or direct all engineering design team activities on a project which include but are not limited to:
Development of detailed project scope, design time-lines, functions and requirements, design basis and criteria, design scheduled and tracking, project engineering budget, calculations, drawing generation, research, design review, inter-discipline design coordination, design approval, design change control, specifications, approval of contractor technical and material submittals and field verification of construction compliance to design.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited school with a minimum of 10 years' experience (with emphasis on Structural Engineering).
An active professional engineering (PE) license is preferred.
Requires strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability interface effectively with various clients, production and support organizations, management, and hourly wage employees.
Must be willing to work in a production environment.
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Successful drug screening.
Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a security or clearance badge.
Requires a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status.
Location/Work Arrangement:
This position is a fully onsite position at Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
