Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Charlottesville Operations Engineering Team is looking for you to join our team as a Manager 2 - Manufacturing Engineering.
The Manager 2 - Manufacturing Engineering will lead a high-performing team of Manufacturing Engineers and Engineering Technicians supporting machining, hydraulics, welding, and coating manufacturing operations. She/he will strengthen production capability, ensure manufacturing excellence across complex defense products and programs, and drive digital transformation through the adoption of new technologies.

Primary Level Salary Range: $115,000.00 - $172,400.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.

What You'll Get To Do:
Leadership & Team Development
- Manage personnel including supporting career development, employee engagement, time approval, staffing, yearly reviews, and all other related activities.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Manufacturing Engineers and Technicians supporting machine shop, hydraulic test systems, welding, and coating processes.
- Establish clear priorities, provide technical guidance, and foster a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and accountability thus driving customer satisfaction.
- Collaborate with manufacturing team members to ensure clarity of quotations and deliverables as well as promote knowledge transfer.
Manufacturing Engineering Ownership
- Oversee manufacturability reviews for incoming programs, ensuring alignment with production capabilities and cost targets.
- Partner closely with Design Engineering to shape early requirements, optimize product designs, and reduce release cycle time.
- Guide the development of manufacturing processes for complex machined components and assemblies, leveraging CAD/CAM, GD&T, and advanced machining principles.
- Serve as the process leader for machining and assembly methods, heat treating and coating/painting.
- Support Manufacturing Process development, including all aspects of producibility, affordability, quality, technology roadmaps, and related activities.
- Support the planning and coordination of capital equipment and process development projects including responsibility for achieving allocated financial budgets.
Cross-Functional Leadership
- Coordinate daily with Engineering, Production Control, Quality, Program Management, and Operations Management to proactively resolve manufacturing challenges.
- Work with area management, subject matter experts, suppliers, etc. (as required) to quickly and efficiently troubleshoot and solve issues related to machined assemblies.
- Support cost and schedule performance through data-driven decision making, including SQL-based analytics, Tableau reporting, and executive-level communication.
- Serve as a key contributor to problem solving Tiger teams, product transition efforts, and various cross functional process improvement initiatives.
- Brief upper management, project management, and customers as required on machining process technology, product issue resolution, personnel development plans and status, organization issues/progress, etc.
Process Improvement & Digital Transformation
- Lead technical innovations that improve area operations.
- Develop process, equipment, and tool advancements from business justification and demonstration of capability to production deployment and adoption.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives, driving reductions in cycle time, scrap, rework, and non-value-added tasks.
- Support sector-level process updates, best-practice development, and digital tool integration (Teamcenter/PLM, MissionPLM, CAD/CAM and new SAP ERP/MRP adoption).
- Champion Lean, Agile, and model-based approaches that enhance design-release quality, product flow, and operational efficiency.
Basic Qualifications for the Manager 2 - Manufacturing Engineering:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or other STEM discipline with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in engineering or manufacturing OR a Master's degree with 6 years of relevant experience in engineering or manufacturing
- Experience in machining and fabrication processes (3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC)
- Experience in manufacturing engineering for mechanical products
- Experience with cross-functional collaboration in a production environment
- At least 2 years of experience managing or leading people or projects
- Ability to lead the quoting process for mechanical products
- Experience with GD&T standards and hands-on application; using CAD/CAM data for graphical product/process descriptions and presentations
- Experience managing project schedules, earned value, and budgetary spending
- Experience using Microsoft Excel and Minitab for process data analysis
- Experience using Microsoft PowerPoint as a tool for communicating data in a presentation forum
- The ability to obtain and maintain a US Secret level security clearance is required.
- US Citizenship is a prerequisite.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading or mentoring engineers or technicians in a machining or fabrication environment
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering area
- Six Sigma Black Belt/Green Belt certification from an accredited program
- Strong communication, customer interface experience, and ability to lead under pressure
- 5 years of experience in the development of electronic products, mechanical assemblies, and manufacturing processes
- Experience with digital transformation initiatives, PLM/MissionPLM, Teamcenter/MPLM
- Experience with data analytics (SQL Server, Tableau) and executive-level reporting
- Experience with process improvement methodologies (Lean, Agile, cost reduction); complex hardware system design and manufacturing integration
- Experience with manufacturing where various machining processes such as CNC machining, EDM, Heat treatment, and CMM are monitored and improved upon
- Experience with machine code data standards
- Experience designing mechanical tooling for various fabrication processes (CNC machining and manual assembly applications) and using and/or designing processes for CNC equipment: milling equipment and sheet metal fabrication
- Experience with heat treatment processes as well as finishing processes such as painting and coating
- Experience with CAM processes utilizing Siemens Applications and NX CAD/CAM in an integrated Teamcenter environment
