Leidos is seeking Research and Development Engineering intern to join our team at the Saxton Transportation Operations Laboratory (STOL) in McLean, VA. The Saxton Lab supports the USDOT and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) with a range of transportation and operations research programs. This is a hands-on opportunity to be part of a large interdisciplinary research team that advances connected and automated vehicle technologies by developing, testing, and demonstrating new capabilities associated with vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications (V2V, V2I, and V2X).

- Develop and execute simulations in MATLAB/Simulink to analyze system-level communication performance, latency, and reliability across different scenarios.
- Leverage scenario generation tools such as Argonne National Laboratory’s RoadRunner to design and validate communication environments for testing and analysis.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and drive data solutions.
- Supporting the tech transfer team schedule technical stakeholder engagement sessions, draft agendas, facilitate technical discussions, and capture notes.
- Assisting engineers and researchers with various phases of scientific research and laboratory upkeep.
- Configuring hardware and software systems required for control of traffic signals, traffic management systems, and vehicle guidance systems.
- Testing simulation environment, where tools can be tested safely and efficiently and new algorithms can be explored before deploying hardware.
- Data collection, parsing, display, storage, retrieval, and analysis.
- Database operations and data warehousing.
- Communications with network or hardware devices including radios.
- Testing control of automated vehicles, infrastructure and vehicular radios.
- Developing systems in an open-source environment for use by researchers across the country.
Required Skills:
To qualify for this internship, you must have:
- Currently enrolled in or have completed a Master’s or PhD in a relevant scientific or technical discipline such as Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Automotive Technology, or a closely related field.
- Aptitude for technology and interest in intelligent transportation solutions.
- Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink for modeling, simulation, and system design.
- Knowledge of Automated driving system simulation technologies.
- Knowledge of Connected vehicle or transportation communication standards (e.g., SAE J2735, NTCIP 1202, etc.)
- Software development tools and methods, including one or more commonly used programming languages, such as C++, Python, JAVA, and Bash scripting.
- Good team player skills and ability to give and take constructive feedback.
- Promptness, schedule-consciousness, and focus on the work at hand.
- Valid driver’s license and suitability to operate a motor vehicle.
- GPA included on your application and resume.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance (which includes three years of immediate residency in the US).
- Must be prompt, schedule-conscious, and able to focus on the work at hand.
It would be an advantage if you have experience or knowledge in some or all the following areas:
- Preferred familiarity with Argonne National Laboratory’s RoadRunner tool for scenario generation and testing.
- Experience with Microsoft Office, Dynamics, and PowerBI.
