  • As a Supervisory Police Officer, you will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Serves as shift supervisor over a group of police officers who provide law enforcement and protective service.
  • Exercises control over assigned shift of police officers performing law enforcement and crime prevention duties to maintain law and order during normal and emergency operations.
  • Performs and supervises police duties to assure the protection of life, property, and the civil rights of individuals through the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, agency rules, and regulations.
  • Supervises the activities and operations of all shift law enforcement personnel with responsibility and authority on matters pertaining to shift activities and operations.
  • Enforces and maintains law and order to deter crime and other violations of law, regulation, policy, directive, or rule and to preserve and/or restore the peace.
  • Ensures DLA personnel, facilities, and resources are protected by maintaining adequate anti-terrorism readiness posture.

  • Firearm Requirements: The incumbent must qualify initially and annually with their assigned weapon to maintain employment. Employees will be given three opportunities to qualify.
  • Psychological Requirements: The incumbent must possess emotional and mental stability. Job compatibility and interpersonal skills will be accessed during job interviews, medical evaluations, and through continual observation by supervisors.

  • Mission Essential: This is a Mission Essential (ME) position. The incumbent may be required to report to work in the event of a natural disaster, inclement weather, or crisis.
  • Supervisory Probation: Required
  • Individual must possess a valid state operator license to operate standard vehicles (sedan, pick-Ups, etc.).
  • Required to wear a police uniform and maintain appearance and grooming standards per DLA policies.
  • This position does not meet the definition of law enforcement officer (LEO) and is excluded from coverage as LEO for purposes of the Federal Employment Retirement System-Base Annuity IA W 5 CPR, Part 842, and Subpart H.
  • As first responders to chemical/biological attacks, must be able to train and wear personal protective equipment to include mask, suit, boots, and gloves.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • Assignments may be performed at any job site within the organization. Travel may be required.
Qualifications

To qualify for a Supervisory Police Officer, your qualifications must include:

A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position, and is directly in or related to this position. For current and former Federal civilian service employees, to qualify for the GS-09 grade level, specialized experience must be at the GS-07 grade level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. For all other applicants, to qualify for the GS-09 grade level, specialized experience must be at the GS-08 grade level or equivalent in the military or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes:
  • GS-07: Assigns officers their individual assignments to ensure their understanding and comprehension of responsibilities and duties. Assists in briefing the shift on pertinent information, scheduled or expected events, and criminal information in a "roll call" setting. Assists the change of shifts and ensures the proper posting/ dispatching of officers, Reviews all reports and records prepared by shift personnel to assure reports are written in a timely manner. Discusses with subordinates alternate methods in handling situations more effectively.
  • GS-08: Discusses with personnel their individual assignments to ensure their understanding and comprehension of responsibilities and duties of assignment. Briefs the shift on pertinent information, scheduled or expected events, and criminal information in a "roll call" setting. Conducts the change of shifts and ensures the proper posting/ dispatching of officers, Reviews all reports and records prepared by shift personnel to assure reports are written in a timely manner and the workload provides for comprehensive and technically accurate reports. Notes and records actions taken, obtains additional facts and information and discusses with subordinates alternate methods in handling situation more effectively.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Lautenberg Amendment: This position requires the incumbent to carry a firearm while in an on duty status only. Any person who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition (title 18, U.S.C., section 922 (g)). Incumbents who have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor crime of domestic violence within the meaning of the referenced statute are not eligible for a police officer position in DLA.

Training Requirements: Individual must have successfully completed the basic police training course at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (Glynco, GA), the U.S. Army Civilian Police School (Ft Leonard Wood, MO), or other police academy as determined by the Agency. Must successfully complete and/or meet all formal and in-service training and certification requirements, to include weapons certifications, CPR, AED, DOD and Joint Training Regulations.

Duty Hours: Incumbent is considered essential to the day-to-day operations of the installation and is subject to immediate recall or long term shift assignments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for extended periods of time. Incumbent is subject to shift rotation and assignment to abnormal tours of duty.

Medical Requirements and Medical Evaluations: These positions require moderate to hazardous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. Medical requirements outlined in Agency policy apply to all police officers. Incumbent must have the capacity to perform the essential functions of the position, including acting as a first responder to all types of emergencies or volatile situations without risk to themselves or others. A medical evaluation will be completed annually.

Physical Fitness Requirements: Incumbent must pass an initial and annual physical fitness test and medical evaluation.

Statement of Understanding: Incumbents will be required to read and sign DLA Form 1892, DLA Police Employment Conditions/Statement of Understanding and Agreement. If they sign the form and cannot meet any of the conditions of employment as specified, it serves as a basis for removal in accordance with applicable Federal and/or agency regulations. If the incumbent signs this form and later declines to take the physical fitness test or attend basic police training academy, it also will serve as a basis for removal in accordance with applicable Federal and/or agency regulations.

Education

Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.

Drug-Free Workplace Policy

The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is committed to maintaining a safe, drug-free workplace. All DLA employees are required to refrain from illegal drug use on and off duty. DLA conducts pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, and random drug testing.

Applicants tentatively selected for employment in testing designated positions will undergo a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Refusal to undergo testing or testing positive for illegal drugs will result in withdrawal of the tentative job offer and a six-month denial of employment with DLA from the date of the drug test.
