Piper Companies is seeking a Lead Engineer (IC) for a technology-driven Insurance organization focused on modern, cloud-native application services and SaaS platform enablement. This position will lead the design, development, and integration of internal applications and vendor-based SaaS platforms, supporting scalable, reliable systems that power customer relationship and workflow management platforms. This is a full-time opportunity for a hybrid position located in Durham, NC .
Responsibilities for the Lead Engineer include:
· Lead the design, development, and maintenance of in-house applications and SaaS-based platforms, ensuring reliability, scalability, and performance.
· Own and evolve the SMART (CRM) and related internal platforms, including configuration, workflow management, and platform customization.
· Design and implement integration patterns between internal systems and third-party SaaS platforms, managing data flows, APIs, and event-driven workflows.
· Ensure systems are operationally sound by establishing monitoring, alerting, documentation, and runbooks to support production stability.
· Provide technical leadership and mentorship to one direct report and collaborate with additional engineering resources, including offshore team members.
· Participate in architectural planning, technical decision-making, and platform roadmap discussions.
· Conduct light people leadership duties, including annual performance reviews, coaching, and skill development.
Qualifications for the Lead Engineer include:
· 5-9 years of professional software engineering experience with increasing technical ownership and leadership responsibility.
· Proven experience as a Lead Engineer or Technical Lead in an individual contributor capacity.
· Strong hands-on experience with Node.js, React, TypeScript, and modern AWS services (Lambda, ECS, SQS, etc.).
· Experience with CRM platforms or internally built "fact systems."
· Exposure to DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and observability tooling.
· Demonstrated experience integrating and configuring SaaS platforms alongside internally developed applications.
· Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Compensation for the Lead Engineer includes:
· Salary range: $120,000 - $130,000
