Purpose and Impact: NRL 5500 in conjunction with 5300, 5700 and 8100 is deeply involved in the Advanced Spectrum Coexistence Demonstration. This demonstration will provide the Department of War with information on the viability of sharing spectrum bands that are used by the military systems critical to national defense. The sharing entity will be the commercial wireless industry that provides a national engine for economic development. The demonstration will involve the collection on the detailed performance of military systems in the presence of interference resulting from sharing with commercial wireless cellular providers.
Essential Responsibilities: The primary role of a data scientist is to analyze data and find trends within the data, to create predictions. These insights help direct the creation of effective solutions, as focal points that aren't obvious can be exposed through the analysis. This process requires a wide variety of techniques, as data first needs to be transformed into a usable format before anything is done. This can range from plain text files to semi-structured files, or even collections of non-alphanumerical data. Data scientists are also skilled in creating output visualizations, to be able to convey heavy mathematical results to those who may be unfamiliar. This concept is often referred to as "bridging a gap" between statistically significant findings and engineered solutions, essentially turning data into useful knowledge. Data scientists may also be involved in the creation of machine learning models that provide the most accurate predictions of underlying processes. These models must be verified to ensure reliability in a variety of conditions. The outgrowth of the machine learning processes and subsequent validation leads to artificial intelligence frameworks that are broadly applied across a variety of problems.
