Duties

  • You will ensure the shipyard strategic plan, mission, vision and values are communicated to the instructional team and integrated into the teams strategies and objectives.
  • You will articulate and communicate assignments and priorities provided by the Branch Head to the team, specifically problems to be solved, actionable events, milestones, program issues under review, and deadlines and time frames for completion.
  • You will coach the team in the selection and application of appropriate problem-solving methods and techniques, provide advice on work methods, practices and procedures, and assist in identifying the parameters of a viable solution.
  • You will identify, distribute, and balance the workload among assigned team members in accordance to priorities provided by the branch head.
  • You will train or arrange for the training of team members in methods and techniques of team building and working in teams to accomplish tasks or projects.
  • You will monitor and report on the status and progress of work, checking on work in progress and reviewing completed work to see that the Branch Head's instructions on work priorities, methods, deadlines and quality have been met.
  • You will serve as coach, facilitator, and/or negotiator in coordinating team initiatives and in consensus building activities among the team and maintain current knowledge to answer questions from the team on procedures, policies, directives, etc.
  • You will maintain Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and shipyard administrative requirements and directives, health physics reference materials, technical handbooks, and established practices for the assigned instructional area-of-responsibility.
  • You will develop, administer, and review course materials, training aids, and qualification examinations involving radiological control requirements.
  • You will coordinate the preparation, presentation and communication of training related assessments and reports to the Branch Head.
  • You will research, learn and apply a wide range of qualitative and/or quantitative methods, including casual analysis, to identify, assess, and improve team effectiveness, efficiency and work products in support of such assessments and reports.
  • You will lead the team in assessing its strengths and weaknesses and provide leadership to the team in exploring alternatives and determining what improvements can be made (e.g., in work methods, processes and procedures).
  • You will estimate and report to the team and Branch Head progress in meeting milestones and deadlines of actions, projects and tasks, and ensure that team members are aware, plan, and participate in the achievement of team goals and objectives.
  • You will resolve simple, informal complaints of team members and refer others, such as formal grievances and appeals, to the Branch Head or an appropriate shipyard management official.
  • You will review radioactivity control-related plans and procedures to assure that radiological controls are adequate for anticipated and actual on-the-job conditions.
  • You will assure adherence to radiological control requirements for assignments which involve numerous processes in several high skill level trades (e.g., pipefitting, welding, machining, and rigging).
  • You will recommend changes to work plans and trades procedures to improve radiological controls, correct deficiencies, increase efficiency, minimize exposure to radiation, and prevent nuclear incidents.
  • You will conduct surveillance of naval nuclear propulsion program work to assure radiological control training materials and qualification examinations reflect current practices and procedures.
  • You will maintain qualification as senior radiological control technician and when assigned serve in a wide range of radiation control operations including complicated and demanding projects.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will need to be able to lift/carry loads up to 40 pounds in weight.
  • You will need to be able to climb ladders, stairs, and/or scaffolding.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: previously held or currently qualified as a radiological control technician at a naval nuclear maintenance activity OR as an engineering laboratory technician assigned to a nuclear-powered naval vessel; experience in a wide range of radiation control practices and requirements associated with nuclear work; knowledge of principles, theories, techniques, and methodologies for the surveillance of nuclear propulsion plant work processes, control of radioactive material and control of radiation exposure and radioactive contamination; knowledge of potential radiological control casualty situations and of the appropriate corrective or mitigating actions to be taken.
