The MITRE Missile Defense Agency (MDA) C4ISR Engineering Department (N262) is dedicated to delivering world-class engineering solutions and technical leadership to enhance next generation Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) capabilities. Its mission is to enable resilient, adaptive, and scalable weapon systems that counter emerging threats and safeguard national security and the homeland.
The N262 Department is seeking a highly motivated and experienced space systems engineer with STEM-related education and experience to serve as a Senior Space Systems Engineer. The successful candidate will support the MDA Space Systems (DCS) strategic defense program office, advancing the Next Generation Missile Defense System Space based capabilities and architectures.
The job is a Colorado Springs, CO based position; this work location is required to effectively foster staff and government customer relationships and shape the direct work program.
Roles & Responsibilities:
The Senior Space Systems Engineer will be responsible for delivering high value/high impact outcomes within a diverse and growing program which is evolving toward a strategic space enterprise mission area. The successful candidate will collaborate with other technical subject matter experts (SMEs) within a portfolio of projects, as well as other FFRDCs and UARCs while performing a variety of technical program office tasks, analyses, studies, and recommendations to inform current and future space based capabilities, focusing on systems integration engineering of space to ground segment development.
This will require experience in systems integration, testing, interoperability, Interface Control Document (ICD) design and development. Additionally, expertise in data management and architectures will be needed, along with experience and technical knowledge of space to ground communications, networks, and infrastructure. Expectation is to closely work with MITRE MDA/DCS project leaders and collaborate with MITRE C2BMC project as well as technical reach back to support accelerated program technical execution.

In addition, specific responsibilities might include (but are not limited to):
- Lead technical interagency government, contractor, and vendor teams in the development, demonstration, and deployment of advanced space-based technologies. Overseeing the technical planning and execution of the work and developing and presenting results to the government sponsor.
- Lead the development of space to ground segment engineering and delivery, ensuring resilient and reliable space to ground communications in a variety of environments.
- Influence design and facilitate implementation of space assets integration and interoperability with C2BMC.
- Identify and perform technical tasks that involve studies, assessments, and technical recommendations and inform programmatic decisions with technical data driven information.
- Identify additional project opportunities to expand the technical work portfolio through government sponsor and internal MITRE engagement.
- Work closely across sponsor directorates, leveraging knowledge and resources, ensuring consistency of effort, and fostering teamwork and innovation among the sponsor, SETA staff, FFRDCs/UARCs, Other Government Agencies, Vendors, and Prime Contractor(s)
Basic Qualifications:
- Minimum DoD Secret security clearance is required with the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance.
- U.S. Citizenship required
- A STEM Bachelor's degree and 5 years of related experience; or 3 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with relevant years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of applied systems engineering, analysis, or space systems development, as well as relevant domain knowledge and technical skills in missile, air, and space systems (to include C2 and space ground segment engineering concepts).
- Demonstrated technical presentation and written communication skills with senior sponsors.
- Experience with DoD missile and space systems development; including assessing systems against performance requirements, conducting trade studies, and supporting integration and tests.
- Experience working with FFRDCs and UARCs.
- The job is a Colorado Springs, CO-based position; this work location is required to effectively foster staff relationships and shape the direct work program
- This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Active Top Secret/SCI Security Clearance.
- Demonstrated in-depth technical and programmatic understanding of existing MDA space systems programs, requirements, configurations, architectures, and missions.
- Demonstrated technical leadership
- A passion for developing and maintaining technical knowledge relevant to space enterprise technologies and advancements through continued learning, active engagement with academia, industry, professional associations, and a desire to remain hands-on.
