The Staff Accountant is a key contributor to the organization's diverse financial operations, responsible for accurate recording and reporting of financial transactions. This role supports both financial and management accounting activities including accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, expense reporting, ERP data entry, internal controls and audit support to ensure compliance with company policies, regulatory standards and government contract requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Accounting and Reporting
- Record, analyze and reconcile financial transactions, including monthly, quarterly and year-end account reconciliations with supporting schedules.
- Perform Accounts Receivable function by preparing and submitting customer invoices and assisting with the collections process.
- Determine proper general ledger coding and journal entries for transactions.
- Prepare and record adjusting journal entries as part of the month end close process.
- Calculate and report items such as sales tax, special compensation payments and other government regulated items.
- Assist with reporting data from accounting system to support project management and decision making.
- Assist with the Accounts Payable function, including processing vendor invoices, purchase orders, expense reports and 1099s.
- Assist with reviewing timesheets to ensure labor costs are calculated properly and with semi-monthly payroll processing.
Compliance and Research
- Follow internal controls and compliance standards, including those related to government regulated travel, expense reporting and timekeeping in cloud based system.
- Research accounting data, system documentation, regulations and guidance to resolve discrepancies.
- Assist with financial and other audits, contract pricing and contract management activities.
Collaboration and Support
- Coordinate and collaborate with internal teams and external partners to ensure accurate and efficient accounting operations.
- Provide administrative support related to accounting operations and team coordination, including monitoring shared inboxes and assisting with onboarding/offboarding workflows.
- Other duties as assigned to support the organization.
Requirements
Required Skills & Abilities
- Ability to prioritize and meet a constant stream of deadlines
- High attention to detail, accuracy and strong organizational skills
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., pivot tables, lookups) and Word
- Experience with an accounting software/ERP system; ability to quickly learn new platforms
- Intellectual curiosity, analytical thinking, problem solving skills and skilled in using technology to gain efficiencies
- Ability to identify issues, research solutions and recommend process improvements
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university
- 1-3 years of accounting experience preferred
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with project billing or government contract accounting environment
- Experience with SharePoint, Teams, Power Automate, Power BI, Unanet or similar GovCon ERP system
