Job Title: DevOps Engineer

Location: Columbus, OH/Dallas, TX/Tulsa, OK/ other client footprints with Hybrid

Duration: 6 Months Contract to hire

Description:

Job Title: Senior Infrastructure Engineer (Kubernetes, GitLab, Azure DevOps)

Overview:
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer to lead and own three mission-critical platforms across our enterprise:

1. Kubernetes (Primary Focus) - Lead architect and SME for our Kubernetes strategy, migration, deployment, and ongoing operations.

2. GitLab (On Prem) - Primary administrator for our on-prem GitLab instance and CI/CD pipelines supporting our Linux-based development teams.

3. Azure DevOps (ADO) - Owner and SME for Azure Repos and Azure Pipelines supporting Azure-focused and Windows-based development teams.

This role will serve as the technical lead and subject matter expert for all things Kubernetes, GitLab, and Azure DevOps-driving modernization, ensuring system stability and performance, and enabling high velocity development teams across the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

Kubernetes Leadership (Primary, ~50%)
1. Lead the enterprise Kubernetes migration effort, including cluster architecture, deployment patterns, workload migration, governance models, and operational best practices.
2. Design, implement, and manage production-grade Kubernetes clusters (on premises or cloud).
3. Establish and maintain solutions for cluster lifecycle management, backup/restore, monitoring, scaling, and security hardening.
4. Work with development teams to containerize applications, optimize workloads, and ensure reliable deployments.
5. Implement robust observability solutions (metrics, logs, traces) and performance optimization strategies.
6. Define and maintain Kubernetes policies, RBAC, network controls, and compliance standards.

GitLab Platform Ownership (~25%)
1. Administer, optimize, and support the on prem GitLab instance, ensuring availability, reliability, and performance.
2. Manage upgrades, patching, authentication (LDAP/SSO/SAML), permissions, and runner capacity.
3. Oversee and improve GitLab CI/CD pipelines used heavily by development teams.
4. Implement backup/DR strategies, usage monitoring, and security controls.
5. Integrate GitLab with other enterprise tools and automate administrative tasks through scripting.

Azure DevOps (ADO) SME (~25%)
1. Own Azure DevOps environments including Azure Repos and Azure Pipelines.
2. Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines for Windows and Azure focused development teams.
3. Implement branching strategies, code policies, build automation, testing integration, and secure deployment patterns.
4. Troubleshoot and resolve pipeline, agent, configuration, and deployment issues.
5. Ensure alignment with security governance, secret management, access control, and compliance requirements.

Required Skills & Experience:
Kubernetes (Expert Level)
:
1. 5+ years hands on Kubernetes experience with deep knowledge of cluster architecture, networking, workload orchestration, and security.
2. Proven experience leading large scale migrations to Kubernetes or major modernization initiatives.
3. Solid understanding of containerization (Docker), Helm, Operators, Ingress, service mesh, and cluster monitoring tools.

GitLab Administration:
1. Demonstrated experience managing GitLab servers in production, including upgrades, runners, pipelines, integration, and performance tuning.
2. Proficiency with Git version control, CI/CD workflows, and Linux system administration.
3. Experience with backup/restore, DR planning, access control models, and troubleshooting complex GitLab issues.

Azure DevOps (ADO):
1. Strong experience designing and maintaining Azure Pipelines, YAML pipelines, artifact management, and release workflows.
2. Skilled in Azure Repos management, branching strategies, repo policies, and automation.
3. Working knowledge of Azure services and infrastructure components.

Infrastructure & Automation Skills:
1. Proficiency in scripting (Bash, PowerShell, Python).
2. Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, ARM/Bicep, Ansible).
3. Understanding of networking, security principles, IAM, secrets management, monitoring, and logging.

Soft Skills:
1. Strong communication and ability to collaborate with developers, operations, security, and leadership.
2. Analytical and problem-solving mindset with experience triaging complex system issues.
3. Able to handle high-visibility responsibilities and serve as the enterprise SME for multiple platforms.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Kubernetes certifications (CKA, CKAD, CKS).
2. Azure certifications (AZ 400, AZ 104, etc.).
3. Prior experience leading cross-platform DevOps modernization initiatives.

Basic Qualifications:
Education:


A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field is required.

Experience:

5 years of relevant work experience is required. An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered, but bachelor's degree is strongly preferred.
