Reporting to the Program Manager, the Education Support Specialist provides administrative, logistical, and programmatic support to NUWC Division Newport's Educational Outreach Program. The position supports the planning, execution, and oversight of STEM-focused outreach initiatives, including afterschool programs, regional competitions, volunteer coordination, and data collection. The position works closely with outreach leadership, volunteers, educators, and community partners to ensure successful delivery of outreach activities aligned with NUWC Division Newport (NUWCDIVNPT)'s mission objectives. This position is located in Newport, RI.

What You'll Do

  • Coordinate and support educational outreach programs, events, and initiatives, ensuring effective execution and continuity of operations.
  • Develop, maintain, and provide program documentation, including notes, contact information, schedules, and continuity materials to ensure uninterrupted program support.
  • Support outreach data collection, reporting, and administrative tracking activities.
  • Assist with procurement-related actions, orders, and logistical coordination to support outreach efforts.
  • STEM Program Execution (SeaPerch & FIRST Tech Challenge)
  • Lead and support SeaPerch afterschool programs by instructing students in remotely operated vehicle (ROV) design, build, testing, and competition preparation.
  • Coordinate and recruit volunteers for SeaPerch and other outreach programs; serve as a liaison between outreach leadership and volunteers.
  • Support regional STEM competitions by preparing students, testing equipment, and ensuring readiness for competitive events.
  • Oversee FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) middle school teams through build and competition seasons, providing technical guidance and instructional support.
  • Develop lesson plans, technical models, and instructional materials to enable volunteers to effectively support student learning.
  • Assemble demonstration mechanisms and example components to support hands-on STEM instruction. Volunteer & Stakeholder Coordination
  • Recruit, coordinate, and onboard volunteers to support outreach programs and events.
  • Provide clear guidance, instructions, and technical reference materials to volunteers serving as substitute or supporting instructors.
  • Collaborate with schools, educators, and outreach leadership to align program delivery with educational objectives.
  • Provide basic IT and equipment troubleshooting support for outreach-related hardware and government-furnished equipment.
  • Assist with software updates, equipment readiness, and operational setup as needed to support program delivery
  • Bid and proposal support if requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.
What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

  • An active secret clearance is required to be considered for this position.
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Two - Three (2-3) years of experience supporting educational, outreach, or training programs, preferably within a government, nonprofit, or STEM-focused environment.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple programs, volunteers, and schedules simultaneously.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to develop instructional materials and program documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while supporting a team-based mission environment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with STEM education programs such as SeaPerch, FIRST Tech Challenge, or similar robotics/engineering initiatives.Familiarity with middle school or secondary education environments.Experience coordinating volunteers or supporting community-based outreach programs.Basic technical aptitude related to robotics, engineering kits, or hands-on instructional tools

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to remain seated in a stationary position 50% of the time. Must also be able to alternate between sitting, standing, and walking.
