The Opportunity
Neuma Consulting is seeking an experienced AI Engineer to join a recently awarded 5-year contract supporting the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) through 2030. In this role, you will be part of a focused AI engineering team dedicated to the formulation and execution of the AI strategy for the office responsible for the dissemination of all finished intelligence across the Defense Intelligence Enterprise.
You will work alongside an AI Architect and 2–3 highly skilled AI engineers, while also collaborating with a broader engineering cohort of nearly 40 developers. This role offers the opportunity to directly influence how advanced AI capabilities are designed, deployed, and operationalized in mission-critical intelligence systems.
The Challenge
This role sits at the intersection of cutting-edge AI research and real-world mission execution. You will help design and implement AI systems that improve how finished intelligence is discovered, contextualized, and delivered to decision-makers across the Department of Defense.
From building scalable retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, to architecting agentic workflows and deploying specialized AI agents within production systems, your work will directly impact the speed, relevance, and trustworthiness of intelligence dissemination. Success in this role requires strong engineering fundamentals, curiosity, and the ability to translate emerging AI techniques into secure, reliable, and mission-ready solutions.
What You’ll Do
• Design, build, and maintain small- and large-scale RAG pipelines supporting intelligence dissemination use cases
• Develop and deploy solutions leveraging large language models (LLMs), including Amazon Bedrock
• Implement and optimize vector-based retrieval systems, including:
o Vector databases such as Pinecone, Qdrant, and Chroma
o Embedding models for semantic search and retrieval
• Design advanced retrieval pipelines, including:
o Indexing and similarity search using FAISS, HNSW, ScaNN, and Annoy
o Hybrid search combining semantic and keyword approaches (e.g., BM25 + ANN)
o Metadata filtering and hybrid retrieval strategies for precision and relevance
• Architect and implement AI agent workflows, including task-oriented and multi-agent systems
• Deploy specialized AI agents within mission-critical production applications
• Develop model evaluations, benchmarks, and performance metrics to assess quality, reliability, and mission effectiveness
• Collaborate closely with the AI Architect, engineers, and broader development teams to integrate AI capabilities into enterprise systems
What You Bring
• 10+ years of professional experience, including significant experience in AI, ML, or advanced software engineering roles
• Active TS/SCI clearance (CI Polygraph preferred)
• Hands-on experience working with LLMs, prompt engineering, and context engineering
• Strong experience designing and implementing RAG architectures
• Experience with vector databases and embedding-based retrieval
• Familiarity with approximate nearest neighbor (ANN) algorithms and hybrid retrieval techniques
• Experience building or deploying AI agents in real-world applications
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and the ability to work across research and production environments
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills
