Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Mid-Level UI/UX Designer to support the U.S. Coast Guard’s enterprise data environment by designing intuitive, accessible, and mission‑ready user experiences for data products, dashboards, and operational applications. This role blends human‑centered design, data visualization, and modern interface development to improve how Coast Guard personnel access, understand, and act on mission‑critical information. The designer will collaborate with product owners, analysts, engineers, and mission stakeholders to translate complex requirements into elegant, functional solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Integrate code into GitHub/GitLab and support CI/CD practices
Diagnose data gaps and quality issues and design test cases for validation
Collaborate with developers and analysts to synchronize code and ensure reliability
Lead end‑to‑end UX design for data products, including research, wireframes, prototypes, and high‑fidelity UI.
Conduct user interviews, usability testing, and workflow analysis with operational Coast Guard users.
Develop and maintain design systems, component libraries, and accessibility standards.
Create intuitive dashboards and data visualizations that support operational decision‑making.
Collaborate with product managers, data engineers, and cloud teams to ensure design feasibility and alignment with technical constraints.
Translate mission needs into clear user stories, acceptance criteria, and UX documentation.
Present design concepts and findings to senior leadership and cross‑functional teams.
Ensure all designs comply with DHS/USCG accessibility, security, and branding requirements.
Support continuous improvement of the user experience across multiple product lines.
Requirements
Required Skills & Qualifications
Must have an active secret clearance
Bachelor’s degree in Design, Human‑Computer Interaction, Computer Science, or related field.
3+ years of professional UI/UX design experience, preferably supporting federal or defense programs
Demonstrated expertise with modern design tools (e.g., Figma, Adobe XD).
Strong portfolio showcasing UX research, wireframes, prototypes, and final UI.
Experience designing for data‑rich environments (dashboards, analytics tools, workflow systems).
Ability to work in agile, cross‑functional teams and communicate with technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Must be able to reliably commute to Washington, D.C. 20032.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting DHS, DoD, or maritime operational communities.
Familiarity with cloud‑based data platforms (AWS, Azure, or similar).
Knowledge of data visualization frameworks (Tableau, Power BI, D3.js).
Experience contributing to or managing design systems.
