An organization within Northrop Grumman's Launch and Exploration division, the Strategic & Space Launch Operating Unit is seeking a Flight Engineer to support flight operations for our Stargazer L-1011 aircraft which carries the Pegasus air launched rocket in its mission to deploy small satellites weighing up to 1,000 pounds into low-Earth orbit.

Please note this is a part-time position. The salary range is based on a full-time schedule and will be prorated to the extent the schedule is reduced.

Overview

The Flight Engineer is a highly skilled technical expert responsible for monitoring and managing the aircraft's complex systems-including engines, fuel, electrical, hydraulics, and environmental controls-both before and during flight. This role is vital in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the aircraft through meticulous pre-flight inspections, continuous system monitoring, and proactive troubleshooting.

Role and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough pre-flight inspections of all mechanical and electrical systems to ensure safety and operational readiness
  • Verify engine, fuel, electrical, hydraulic, and environmental systems meet performance standards
  • Collaborate with flight crew by assisting with flight plans, perform weight & balance and fuel calculations.
  • Utilize operating and performance manuals, as well as checklists, to support all phases of flight
  • Continuously monitor systems through observance of gauges, indicators, and instrument panels during flights
  • Regulate engine power, cabin pressure, fuel flow, and other critical systems to align with the flight plan
  • Make real-time adjustments to aircraft systems and promptly respond to any arising issues during flight in accordance with flight manual procedures
  • Read and follow emergency checklists, providing essential support during abnormal and emergency conditions
  • Act as the technical liaison by reporting system statuses and discrepancies to pilots and the aircraft maintenance ground crew members
  • Document flight records and communicate any aircraft issues, such as adjustments needed for air launches of the Pegasus rocket or other test vehicles
  • Execute tasks that include takeoff and landing data management, normal, abnormal, and emergency procedures
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of aircraft modifications to accommodate air-launch and their impact on system performance


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in an Aerospace Technical Field; OR an Associate's degree with an additional two years of relevant experience
  • FAA Turbo Jet Flight Engineer certificate
  • Current FAA Class II Medical certification
  • FAA Part 121 or 135 experience as a Flight Engineer on the Lockheed L-1011
  • In-depth knowledge and practical experience with large jet transport aircraft systems, performance charts, and flight crew resource management
  • Ability to support flight training and customer missions on an on-call basis
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance
  • US Citizenship is required


Preferred Requirements:
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills and the ability to operate within evolving technological landscapes
  • Prior experience with modifications for specialized flight test vehicles, such as the air launch of the Pegasus rocket
  • Active DoD Secret Clearance


Primary Level Salary Range: $0.00 - $0.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
