Duties
As FIREFIGHTER (CREW CHIEF-DRIVER OPERATOR) (TITLE 5), GS-0081-6, you will serve as a firefighter assigned to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity, structural and airfield firefighting and crash/rescue operations, and assist in the reduction and/or elimination of potential fire hazards.

Individuals who are past the maximum entry age limit of 37 but who previously served in a covered primary position may be reinstated to a covered primary position only if they:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE : GS-06 Level - MUST possess at least 12 months experience, education or training in one or more of the following areas: (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade. (2) Rescue operations. (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards. (4) Operation of fire communications equipment. (5) Controlling hazardous materials incidents. (6) Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention (7) Firefighting and fire prevention theory and techniques; (8) Fixed and mobile firefighting equipment operation. (9) Planning, directing, or carrying out fire protection and prevention programs and operations and/or (10) Performing emergency medical services.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS :
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Major Duties - This is NOT an all-inclusive list:
- Drive firefighting vehicles to fire scenes using predetermined or alternate routes and position the vehicle considering wind, water sources, hazards, and aircraft armament.
- Perform, rescue, and firefighting duties at airfields handling large or complex aircraft carrying fuel, weapons, or hazardous cargo.
- Perform standby duty during aircraft refueling, maintenance operations, welding, or burning on fueled or armed aircraft.
- Perform rescue of personnel and provide first aid measures, including CPR, bleeding control, obstruction removal, and patient stabilization for transport.
- Determine proper pressures, number of lines, and relay requirements to the booster pumper during structural or aircraft firefighting operations.
- Operate hoses, ladders, and hydrants to control and extinguish structural fires in industrial, research, or large facility environments.
- Maintain firefighting equipment and perform functional tests, inspections, and preventive maintenance to ensure operational readiness.
- Perform pre-fire planning by physically going through structures to identify layouts, fire hazards, and locations of fixed fire protection systems.
- Comply with and ensure adherence to federal, state, and local fire protection, safety, and environmental codes and ordinances.
- Use required safety equipment and clothing appropriately and ensure proper fit to enhance overall workplace safety.
- Study field maps to remain familiar with ground areas, structural locations, and potential hazard environments.
- Perform housekeeping duties, facility maintenance, and equipment upkeep associated with assigned fire station areas.
- Perform functional tests and inspections on firefighting equipment and station facilities to ensure compliance with operational standards.
- Prepare reports related to fire runs, training, equipment maintenance, inspections, and other fire department operations.
- Participate in practice drills and training classes to ensure crew proficiency in firefighting techniques and equipment use.
Conditions of employment

- This position is covered by the Lautenberg Amendment. Individuals convicted of a qualifying misdemeanor crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.

- Federal employment is subject to a suitability determination based on a background investigation and the ability to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
- Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
- Recruitment and relocation incentives may be authorized in accordance with applicable regulations.
- Drug testing may be required in accordance with Department of Defense policies.
- May be required to successfully complete trial period.
- Maximum entry age is 37. Exceptions and reentry provisions apply in accordance with DoDI 1400.25, Volume 336.
- Employee must participate in a mandatory physical fitness testing program.
- Must meet and maintain medical standards for Fire and Emergency Services personnel in accordance with OPM GS-0081 and Department of Defense occupational medical requirements.
- This position is FLSA Non-Exempt. Overtime pay is determined in accordance with Fair Labor Standards Act provisions applicable to firefighters.
- Required to work a 24-hour shift schedule, which may include up to a 72-hour workweek (144-hour pay period). Tour of duty is subject to change and may require recall.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license and be able to operate emergency vehicles as required.
- May be required to work the Fire Alarm and Communications Center, participate on HAZMAT teams, and operate aircraft arresting barrier equipment as mission-required.
- Must possess and maintain required DoD Fire and Emergency Services certifications or IFSAC/Pro Board equivalents applicable to the position.
- Position is designated as Essential Personnel and may be required to perform duties during emergencies or disaster declarations, not to exceed authorized limits.
- Position is covered under special retirement provisions for Federal firefighters under FERS or CSRS, as applicable. Coverage may be retroactive to the effective date of the personnel action.

- Will be able to complete a total of 20 years of covered service as a firefighter or law enforcement officer by the last day of the month in which they become age 57.
