The Principal Senior Software Engineer provides advanced technical leadership for the design, development, and integration of mission-critical software supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veteran Experience Services Eligibility and Enrollment (VESEE) 2.0 program. This role is responsible for delivering complex software solutions across legacy and modernized environments while ensuring high standards for code quality, performance, security, and architectural alignment. The Principal Senior Software Engineer guides technical direction, mentors engineers, and ensures engineering decisions support long-term platform sustainability and modernization objectives.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead and execute complex software engineering efforts across the full development lifecycle.

• Review and interpret system requirements, interfaces, and technical specifications.

• Design and implement scalable, secure, and reliable software solutions.

• Develop programming specifications, design artifacts, test scripts, and technical documentation.

• Analyze existing systems to identify reuse opportunities, required enhancements, and modernization needs.

• Ensure consistent architectural patterns and integration approaches across legacy and modern platforms.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product management, UX, systems engineering, and DevSecOps to deliver high-quality solutions.

• Define engineering standards, patterns, and best practices to guide development teams.

• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to software engineers.

• Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend improvements to tools, processes, and architectures.

• Support continuous improvement initiatives across the product development lifecycle.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

• Minimum of six (6) years of experience delivering complex software solutions in enterprise environments.

• Proficiency in multiple programming languages such as Java, Python, and JavaScript/TypeScript.
Experience with modern frameworks including Spring Boot, React, and Next.js.

• Strong understanding of contemporary architectures such as microservices and event-driven systems.

• Hands-on experience with containerization and streaming technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Kafka.

• Experience with relational and NoSQL databases, including data modeling and performance optimization.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

• Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives and influence stakeholders.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED:

• Experience working with Federal agencies, particularly the Department of Veterans Affairs.

• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform and Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.

• Knowledge of federal security and privacy requirements, including FISMA, FedRAMP, and NIST standards.

• Experience integrating with enterprise identity, PKI, and multi-factor authentication solutions.

EDUCATION:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.

CLEARANCE:

• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.

• Remote
