Power Systems Operations Instructor-Senior

This position requires an active Public Trust clearance or the ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance to be considered.

A government contract requires that this position be restricted to U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. You must provide documentation that you are a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident to qualify.

The Power Systems Operations Instructor - Senior supports the Department of Energy (DOE), Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) Headquarters in Lakewood, CO by delivering advanced power systems operations instruction through the Electric Power Training Center (EPTC). This role provides expert-level technical training, curriculum development, and instructional delivery to support WAPA's mission-critical power system operations, compliance, and workforce readiness.

Compensation & Benefits:

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Power Systems Operations Instructor-Senior: $125K-135K/yr.

Pay commensurate with experience.

Power Systems Operations Instructor-Senior Responsibilities Include:
  • Deliver electrical utility systems training covering power system operations, power plant operations, transmission system operations (dispatcher), craft training, and specialized instructional programs.
  • Present existing EPTC course material using the EPTC miniature power simulator system in accordance with established lesson plans.
  • Conduct lectures, briefings, and facilitated discussions using real-world operational experience to enhance student comprehension and applied learning.
  • Develop, maintain, and update curriculum and training materials aligned with NERC certification requirements, Continuing Education Units (CEUs), and Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) principles.
  • Design and implement innovative simulation scenarios that replicate real-world power system operating conditions and challenges.
  • Apply instructional design best practices across multiple delivery methods, including in-person, instructor-led virtual, and blended learning environments.
  • Develop new training tools, methodologies, and instructional enhancements to improve EPTC training effectiveness.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and report on training outcomes and overall program effectiveness to EPTC leadership.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned


Power Systems Operations Instructor-Senior Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:
  • Bachelor's degree required. Degrees in electrical engineering, education with power utility experience, or equivalent combinations of education, certifications, and experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of instructor experience supporting state or federal power systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development and instructional delivery across multiple learning modalities.
  • Extensive knowledge of power system operations, generation, transmission, SCADA, AGC, EMS, energy scheduling, and safe switching procedures consistent with NERC standards.
  • Practical experience with interconnected power systems, high-voltage transmission (100 kV or greater), and power plant operations (10 MW or greater preferred).
  • Strong instructional design, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Understanding of renewable energy integration into bulk power systems.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal
