Duties

  • You will follow blueprints, sketches, shop drawings, verbal instructions, templates, or targets as guides to complete piping installations.
  • You will use pipe cutting and threading tools and equipment to prepare pipe for installation.
  • You will determine the extent of repairs required for piping systems or equipment.
  • You will determine pipe, joint, or valve sizes needed to support pressures of systems.
  • You will check correct circulation, flow, pressure, and leak-free joints in the piping systems.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • Must successfully complete all necessary radiological, nuclear and non-nuclear training and requirements.
  • Must be able to work all shifts.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.

Additional Information:

Performs work indoors and outdoors exposing them to the prevailing weather conditions, noise, and intermittent slippery or uneven surfaces.

Occasionally, work is performed in cramped areas, close confined spaces of ships and submarines with minimum light and ventilation. They are regularly exposed to moving objects, elevations, and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises, and to noise and vibration from machines. Serious injury from slipping and falling may occur while working in the dry dock, uneven surfaces, and from ladders and staging. Dirt, grease, dampness, and chemical fumes are frequently encountered. Various protective devices such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves, and hard hats are used.

Frequently handle objects weighing up to 44 pounds and occasionally, heavy exertion is required.

Work requires frequent sitting, kneeling, crouching, stooping, crawling, climbing, cramped and awkward positions.

Incumbent must be able to work alone or as part of a team under general supervision of the immediate supervisor, general foreman or work leader. Receives general or detailed instructions orally and/or through job orders, blueprints, inter-shop work requests, docking orders, or other documents or directions. The supervisor, general foreman or work leader gives general instructions, sets completion schedules, and assigns assist employees as required. The incumbent is responsible for planning, ordering, placement, arrangement, and layout of systems or installations in order to accomplish the work assignment in a safe, efficient, and timely manner in accordance with accepted procedures and trade standards. The incumbent must plan and arrange for proper and safe operations, ensuring that piping, valves, hoses, fittings, and component parts are safe as well as proper for the work at hand. The incumbent is responsible for testing systems and equipment after completing the installation to ensure proper circulation, flow, pressure, and leak-free condition of installation. The incumbent may assist or be assisted by other employees at varying grade levels. Incumbent is responsible for attending scheduled training when notified by their supervisor, general foreman or work leader in order to maintain required qualifications needed to execute job assignments.

Eligible FWS employees recruited from outside of the insular area may be eligible for a Pay Differential of 20% of their basic pay. Percentages of differentials are subject to change without notice.
