Duties

  • You will perform industrial hygiene inspections, surveys and evaluations individually or as part of a team.
  • You will be exposed to a wide range of physical, chemical and biological hazards.
  • You will assess work practices to identify the population at risk and to detect violations of published health standards.
  • You will research the chemical and toxicological literature, develop and/or recommend individualized methods and approaches to obtain a valid and complete evaluation.
  • You will present oral briefs, if requested and provide detailed written reports of survey findings.
  • You will evaluate the need for quantitative assessment of air contamination, noise and other physical stressors as well as the quantitative assessment of ventilation systems.

  • All personnel who may come in contact with patients, must receive and maintain appropriate vaccination against seasonal influenza. Incumbent must be immunized on an annual basis against influenza.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Experience utilizing professional knowledge of industrial hygiene concepts, principles and practices
  • Experience recognizing and evaluating occupational health hazards, including those for which the nature and extent of hazard is not completely understood
  • Experience devising a variety of control measures, including ventilation, shielding, material substitution, change in work procedures, isolation, education, personal protective devices
  • Experience using industrial hygiene sampling techniques and instrumentation

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
  • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
  • Certification from the Board for Global EHS Credentialing (formerly (ABIH)).

Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
