Description
We are seeking a talented and motivated Automation Engineer to support the customer needs to join our team supporting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Security Operations Center (SOC). The DHS/CBP SOC is a US Government program responsible to prevent, identify, contain and eradicate cyber threats to CBP networks through monitoring, intrusion detection and protective security services to CBP information systems including local area networks/wide area networks (LAN/WAN), commercial Internet connection, public facing websites, wireless, mobile/cellular, cloud, security devices, servers and workstations. The CBP SOC is responsible for the overall security of CBP Enterprise-wide information systems, and collects, investigates, and reports any suspected and confirmed security violations.

Primary Tasks:
- The Automation Engineer will support and modernize key operational processes for the customer’s Security & Technology Policy Division. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who thrives on untangling complex workflows, building automation tools, and delivering clear, data-backed insights. The candidate will play a critical role in triaging, refining, and optimizing the customer Background Investigation and Foreign Service National processes, while also improving knowledge management practices across the Division.
- Assist in efforts to continually refine and optimize the 7300 process to identify gaps, inefficiencies, and opportunities for automation
- Assist the Sr Automation Engineer to Develop, track, and report metrics and analytics related to the 7300 workflow
- Modernize the FSN process using SharePoint and Power Automate workflows to improve efficiency and transparency and tracking
- Assist the Sr Automation Engineer to Monitor FSN activity to include travel requests, resource requests, compliancy and data exfiltration attempts
- Develop insightful dashboards and performance metrics to support FSN process decisions
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including navigating and working effectively with challenging or high-demand customers.
- Apply knowledge management and process improvement skills to standardize procedures and enhance team productivity
- Clearly document processes, changes, and procedures in a detail-oriented and accessible format
- Assist with the collection, consolidation, and analysis of data calls as appropriate
- Update relevant Division SharePoint sites as appropriate, to include ensuring that the latest artifacts are uploaded, and links are functional
- Deliver all requested work products by agreed upon due dates and deadlines
Successful candidates must possess the following skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Business) or equivalent experience.
- A minimum of one to three (1-3) years’ experience in process automation, workflow design, or business process improvement roles.
- Strong technical acumen with the ability to translate complex requirements into clear, concise language
- Strong experience with Microsoft SharePoint, Power Automate, Power Apps, and Power BI.
- Proven track record of process improvement and automation in complex, cross-functional environments
- Strong analytical skills with experience in creating metrics, dashboards, and data visualizations
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical details to non-technical users
- Experience with knowledge management systems and documentation best practices
- Comfortable working with a variety of stakeholders at various levels of management
- Detail-oriented with a proactive mindset and the ability to work independently
- Experience drafting IT, cybersecurity, or related technical documentation using federal government, particularly DHS, official document requirements and style guides.
- Working knowledge of NIST SP 800-171 and NIST SP 800-172
Preferred Qualifications
- STEM degree
- Familiarity with IT service management or related operational frameworks.
- Certification in Microsoft Power Platform, Lean Six Sigma, or similar process improvement methodologies
- Prior experience with CBP.
