SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience which includes, 1). Ordering, stocking, and maintaining medical supplies; 2). Assisting with equipment set-up, use of equipment, and turnover done before, during and following surgery; and 3). Assisting with techniques and procedures used in preparing and administering anesthetic agents to patients undergoing surgery or other medical procedures.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

EDUCATION: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Anesthesia Technician.
OR
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.

- Independently set up anesthesia equipment in each operating room prior to the beginning of the scheduled OR day as well as between cases during the day.
- Assist in total preparation for major cases, assembling IV solutions, preparing operating room with appropriate anesthetic equipment and monitoring devices.
- Assisting with insertion of Swan-Ganz catheters, radial artery lines, and assisting with insertion of peripheral IVs.
- Removal and cleaning of all special and reusable equipment after completion of case.
- Participating in the pre-cleaning, cleaning, Sterile Processing Program and high-level disinfection reprocessing processes, and restocking for bronchoscopes, TEE probes, and ultrasound machines.
- Maintain a constant inventory of medications, intravenous solutions, inhalation anesthetic agents and other expendable or reusable supplies to ensure that these items are adequately stocked.
- Respond to remote areas of the medical center within a timely manner to include but not limited to medical emergencies, diagnostic radiology suites and out of the OR anesthesia sites.
- Responsible for anesthetic delivery systems.
- Use monitoring devices, central nervous systems, Intracranial pressure, Modified EEG.
- Use Cardiovascular systems including Electrocardiogram, Arterial pressure, Noninvasive blood pressure, Central venous pressure, Pulmonary artery pressure monitoring/Sv02, Cardiac output, Doppler.
- Use airway/pulmonary monitoring systems including Capnography/gas analysis, Pulse oximetry, Blood gas analysis, Peripheral nerve stimulator, Temperature monitoring.
- Use a variety of other equipment systems such as Fluid/blood warmers, Forced air warming, Heat and moisture exchanger, Blood salvaging devices, Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE), Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), Ultrasound.
- Use Lab equipment - Thromboelastogram (TEG), Glucometer, ABG, etc.
- Use and operate the auto transfusion machine (cell saver) and related equipment in both scheduled and emergent surgical cases.
- Assist in the operating room accreditation process for Joint Commission and any other inspections and surveys.
- Execute, store and retrieve electronic documents and files using software, such as Microsoft Word and EXCEL, as well as other PC software.
- Learn setup and troubleshooting of the MHS Genesis system for the anesthesia intraoperative record and connections to anesthesia machines and vital signs monitors.
- Prepare transport monitors for patient transport, including ICU transfers and transfers from offsite anesthesia locations.

- This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.

- In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster), the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
