The Facility Maintenance Technician performs a diverse range of skilled maintenance and construction activities pertaining to buildings and grounds. This professional is proficient in executing tasks with a high degree of expertise and is capable of working autonomously or collaboratively with other Facility personnel. The Technician is instrumental in undertaking preventative, predictive, and routine maintenance assignments, thereby contributing to the seamless operation and optimal functioning of the facility.

Summary :

Founded by legendary aircraft designer Burt Rutan, Scaled Composites is a 40+ year-old aerospace company continually working to push boundaries, prove out ideas, and influence the future. We are a rapid prototyping and manufacturing facility, designing, building, and testing proof-of-concept and prototype vehicles. We have flown an average of one new aircraft type per year over our 40+ year history such as Proteus, GlobalFlyer, SpaceShipOne, Model 401, and Stratolaunch.

Duties and Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Perform routine building maintenance tasks in one or more fields (e.g. carpentry, electrical, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, etc.)
  • Conduct preventive maintenance inspections (PMI) on buildings, equipment and systems, identifying potential issues and performing necessary repairs to prevent system failures
  • Troubleshoot and repair failures of production and facilities equipment
  • Ensuring maximum equipment efficiency and effectiveness
  • Responsible for the upkeep of buildings, equipment, systems such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and perform related work as required
  • Accurately document maintenance activities, work orders, and PM records in the maintenance tracking system
  • Ensure safety standards are used in compliance with all company, local, city, state and federal guidelines

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Proven experience as a Facilities Maintenance Technician or similar role
  • Experience in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and other maintenance tasks
  • Basic understanding of electrical, hydraulic, and other systems
  • Knowledge of general maintenance processes and methods
  • Hands-on technical skills to perform maintenance and repairs on various types of equipment and systems such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing and mechanical
  • Problem-solving abilities to identify, troubleshoot and solve issues that may arise with facility equipment and infrastructure
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents and drawings, and write detailed reports
  • Knowledge of common tools, materials, equipment and methods used in carpentry, roofing, electrical, plumbing, painting and masonry trades
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software, and the ability to learn how to effectively use maintenance software to input data and research parts
  • Willingness to learn and apply new methods of building maintenance and repair
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven safety record with the ability to identify safety issues and take corrective action
  • Ability to effectively manage time by appropriately prioritizing work
  • Strong communication skills to effectively interact with team members, supervisors, and other staff, and to understand and carry out instructions
  • Ability to work autonomously, as well as, in a team environment, using effective verbal and interpersonal communication skills in-person /over radio, and providing great customer service
  • Excellent customer service skills to respond to requests for maintenance or assistance in a timely and professional manner.
  • Valid California driver's license.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Clearance.

Education and Experience:
  • Minimum of 3 years relevant experience in a variety of commercial building maintenance, including but not limited to experience in hydraulics, pneumatics, mechanics, and basic plumbing and electrical repairs
  • Post-secondary education and/or technical trade certificate

Essential Job Functions:
  • Occasional lifting 50+ lbs.
  • Must have sufficient agility to work in the interior of an aircraft structure. Will need to bend, stoop, squat, and/or kneel to occasionally work in cramped, tiring, and uncomfortable positions.
  • Ability to work overhead for prolonged periods of time including lifting up to 10-15 pounds.
  • Standing 95% of the day, sometimes 8.5 - 12 hours per day.
  • Required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment for an assigned task.
  • Work with composite materials such as epoxy resin systems, fiberglass, carbon fiber, and foam/core products. Will also work closely with chemicals, such as acetone and alcohol.
  • May be exposed to dirt, oil, fuel, grease, and hydraulic fluids.
  • Able to adapt to altered schedules.
  • Occasional pushing/pulling of heavy tools and tables (75-100 + lbs., with assistance).
  • Manual dexterity to handle small parts, and tools and to manipulate composite material to various shapes using pressure.
  • Repetitive hand and arm motions including, but not limited to, trimming, sanding, and/or grinding of materials.
  • Occasional sitting computer work.
  • Vision at close distances and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to operate a forklift and/or other heavy machinery including occasional driving of company-owned vehicles.
  • Work on varied work surfaces/environments, including but not limited to working in a busy shop environment, cold room, or in/on aircraft structures including raised platforms including but not limited to ladders, scaffolding, and stairs.
  • Work may be performed inside or outside of buildings. May be exposed to changing weather conditions.
  • Must be able to read and understand SDS.
