ECS is seeking a Cloud Engineer to work in our Arlington, VA office / remote .
The Cloud Engineer will play a critical role in supporting a federal IT modernization initiative by designing, implementing, and maintaining cloud-based infrastructure solutions. This position requires working within a highly regulated environment while driving innovation and efficiency through cloud adoption. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to migrate legacy systems, implement cloud-native solutions, and ensure compliance with federal security standards and regulations.
Working as part of a dynamic modernization program, the Cloud Engineer will contribute to transforming government operations through scalable, secure, and cost-effective cloud technologies. Responsibilities
Infrastructure Design & Implementation
- Design and implement scalable cloud architectures using AWS GovCloud, Azure Government, or other FedRAMP-authorized cloud platforms
- Develop Infrastructure as Code ( IaC ) templates using tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or ARM templates
- Migrate legacy on-premises systems to cloud environments while maintaining operational continuity
- Configure and manage virtual networks, load balancers, storage solutions, and compute resources
Security & Compliance
- Implement cloud security best practices in accordance with NIST frameworks, FISMA requirements, and agency-specific security controls
- Configure and maintain security groups, network access control lists, identity and access management (IAM) policies
- Support Authority to Operate (ATO) processes and maintain continuous monitoring capabilities
- Ensure compliance with FedRAMP, FIPS 140-2, and other federal security standards
Operations & Monitoring
- Implement automated monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions for cloud infrastructure
- Perform capacity planning and cost optimization analysis
- Develop and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity plans
- Support 24/7 operations through on-call rotation and incident response procedures
- Create and maintain technical documentation and standard operating procedures
Collaboration & Innovation
- Partner with application development teams to optimize cloud resource utilization
- Participate in architecture review boards and technical design sessions
- Mentor junior team members and contribute to knowledge sharing initiatives
- Research and evaluate emerging cloud technologies for potential adoption
Salary Range: $150,000 - $180,000
Required Skills
- U.S. Citizenship
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust suitability determination
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science , Information Technology, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent professional experience
- 7 + years of experience in cloud engineering, infrastructure management, or related technical roles
- Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud platform (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform)
- Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM templates, Pulumi )
- Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift)
- Knowledge of networking concepts including VPNs, firewalls, load balancing, and DNS
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
- Understanding of federal IT security frameworks (NIST 800-53, FISMA, FedRAMP)
- Current federal government or contractor experience supporting federal agencies
- Professional cloud certifications (AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect, Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect)
- Experience with FedRAMP-authorized cloud environments (AWS GovCloud, Azure Government)
- Security certifications such as Security+, CISSP, or CCSP
- Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef)
- Proficiency in scripting languages (Python, PowerShell, Bash)
- Knowledge of database technologies and data migration strategies
- Experience with agile development methodologies
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams
- Adaptability to rapidly changing technology landscapes
