Scope of Work: The Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic (NIWC LANT) Cloud Computing Innovation, Transformation, and Integration (CLOUD CITI) Division is tasked with providing hosting environments and platforms for Navy applications, as well as other DoD and Homeland Security (HLS) applications utilizing both Component Enterprise Data Centers (CEDCs) and Commercial Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) as hosting platforms. The Junior Splunk Engineer will support the Cloud CITI Service Delivery IPT by performing foundational system administration and Splunk operational tasks across on-prem and cloud environments. This role provides hands-on exposure to log ingestion, dashboard development, system health monitoring, and cybersecurity compliance activities within a DoD setting. The Junior Splunk Engineer will work closely with senior Splunk administrators, cybersecurity professionals, and mission support personnel to ensure reliable log ingestion, system performance, and user access management. The role includes assisting with system configuration, monitoring, documentation, and basic troubleshooting while developing skills required to support DoD cyber operations and Splunk SIEM administration.
Responsibilities:
• Assist in installing and configuring Splunk Enterprise software, apps, and add-ons.
• Support onboarding of data inputs from servers, network devices, and applications.
• Monitor ingestion pipelines, indexing processes, and system performance metrics.
• Create and maintain basic dashboards, alerts, reports, and saved searches using SPL.
• Assist in collecting system and log data for incident response and forensics support.
• Maintain system configuration documentation, diagrams, and change logs.
• Assist in managing user access, roles, and supporting STIG compliance requirements.
• Support integration activities with enterprise tools such as ServiceNow, Tenable ACAS, Trellix ESS, EvaluateSTIG, and eMASS.
• Collaborate with senior system administrators and cybersecurity team members to build Splunk knowledge and operational capability.
Requirements/Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronic/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Information Systems
• Must be able to obtain a Department of Defense (DoD) Secret Security Clearance
• Must obtain CompTIA Security+ certification within six (6) months of hire
• Basic knowledge of Windows and/or Linux system administration
• Foundational understanding of networking (TCP/IP, firewalls, DNS, routing)
• Exposure to scripting languages such as PowerShell, Bash, or Python
• Awareness of cybersecurity fundamentals and DoD STIG compliance principles
• Interest in SIEM platforms such as Splunk
• Ability to follow procedures accurately and escalate issues appropriately
• Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
• Motivated to learn new technologies and grow technical expertise
• Must be a US citizen
• Must hold or be able to obtain a Department of Defense (DoD) Secret Security Clearance
