Pay Range: $120,510 - $147,564 Annually for 302.1 level

Job Description

We have an opening for a Scientific Associate in the Respirator Services & Instrumentation Group. You will collaborate with senior technical personnel and scientists to provide complex technical support with industrial hygiene instrumentation calibration and repair, in-place and mobile high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) testing, and high-efficiency gas absorption (HEGA) testing. This position is within the Analytical Services & Instrumentation Division of the Technical Services Department of the Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) Directorate.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

You will
  • Perform moderately complex technical procedures related to instrument calibration.
  • Follow complex technical procedures to perform HEPA and HEGA filter testing across Site 200 and Site 300. This includes in-place testing on ventilation systems, and mobile testing on vacuums and air movers.
  • Maintain, operate and occasionally repair laboratory equipment within a strict Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) framework.
  • Coordinate daily work activities with team, supervisor, Programmatic Areas, Responsible Individuals, and Facility Managers.
  • Author and edit complex technical work procedures in accordance with LLNL Management Assurance requirements.
  • Develop and maintain equipment maintenance schedules and consumable laboratory inventories.
  • Collaborate with a staff of scientific technologists/associates, including work planning and scheduling, procurement, training, team meetings, mentoring, and preparing instructions and procedures.
  • Ensure assignments are performed in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practices, requirements and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, environmental science, engineering, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience performing in-place HEPA & HEGA filter testing in a schedule driven team environment, in accordance with American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) N511 In-Service Testing of Nuclear Air-Treatment, Heating, Ventilating, and Air-Conditioning Systems & AG-1 Code on Nuclear Air & Gas Treatment.
  • Experience with instrument or equipment calibration with knowledge of standard industrial hygiene equipment.
  • Experience with electronic database management to track and update inventories like instruments, equipment, or consumables.
  • Experience writing, editing, and performing technical field reviews of complex laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to organize work to manage and perform multiple work tasks in a high pressure, time limited environment.
  • Understanding of the application of work control or work permitting procedures for employee health and safety.
  • Verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively write, present, explain and communicate complex technical information to all levels of personnel.

Qualifications We Desire
  • Significant experience in industrial hygiene and/or other health and safety instrument calibration.
  • Experience in a laboratory setting that adheres to International Organization for Standard (ISO)/International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)17025 General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories.
  • Completion of the NUCON Essentials Workshop on ANSI/ASME N510 or ASME N511 filter testing, or equivalent.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.

Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities require separate approval. Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
