As part of the EASS eCMS program supporting modernization and sustainment of VA acquisition systems, the Data Engineer designs, builds, and maintains data pipelines, transformations, integrations, and data structures that support analytics, reporting, workflows, and operational functions. This role partners with analysts, architects, developers, and system owners to ensure data flows are accurate, optimized, secure, and aligned with business needs.

As part of the EASS eCMS program supporting modernization and sustainment of VA acquisition systems, the Data Engineer designs, builds, and maintains data pipelines, transformations, integrations, and data structures that support analytics, reporting, workflows, and operational functions. This role partners with analysts, architects, developers, and system owners to ensure data flows are accurate, optimized, secure, and aligned with business needs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and maintain data pipelines and integration workflows supporting ingestion, transformation, and data delivery.
- Design structured datasets, data mappings, and schemas that support analytics and reporting functions.
- Profile, validate, and reconcile data to ensure accuracy, consistency, and completeness across systems.
- Identify and resolve data quality issues, implementing improvements that enhance data reliability.
- Document data logic, lineage, transformations, and mapping rules used across the program.
- Optimize SQL queries, ETL logic, data models, and data processing jobs for performance and scalability.
- Collaborate with analysts, developers, and architects to support new reporting, analytics, and integration needs.
- Troubleshoot data integration issues, performance bottlenecks, and processing failures.
- Support system upgrades and releases by validating impacts on data flows and logic.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Minimum of five (5) years of data engineering, ETL development, or data integration experience.
- Strong SQL proficiency and experience working with SQL Server or equivalent relational databases.
- Experience building data transformations, structured datasets, and integration logic.
- Strong analytical and documentation skills with the ability to diagnose data anomalies.
- Ability to collaborate across technical teams and communicate data logic effectively.
- Experience supporting data validation, profiling, or reconciliation activities.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED:
- Experience working with Federal agencies, particularly the Department of Veterans Affairs.
- Experience with cloud-based data services, orchestration tools, or enterprise ETL platforms.
- Familiarity with analytics or reporting tool data structures.
- Knowledge of data governance, data quality practices, or metadata standards.
- Experience working in environments built on Azure, .NET, SQL Server, IIS, and related VA enterprise technologies.
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science , Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
CLEARANCE:
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
