The National Security Sector at Leidos currently has an opening for a senior nuclear engineer for work regarding the protection of military systems from electromagnetic pulse (EMP) environments generated by nuclear-weapon detonations. Leidos’ customer is the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), located at Fort Belvoir, VA. The position is full time. Applicant may telework remotely. Overall task: Provide technical assistance regarding the protection of military systems against EMP threat environments.

The National Security Sector at Leidos currently has an opening for a senior nuclear engineer for work regarding the protection of military systems from electromagnetic pulse (EMP) environments generated by nuclear-weapon detonations. Leidos’ customer is the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), located at Fort Belvoir, VA. The position is full time. Applicant may telework remotely. Overall task: Provide technical assistance regarding the protection of military systems against EMP threat environments.
Primary Responsibilities.
- Travel to, and observe, field tests of EMP-protection systems executed in accordance with military standards (e.g., MIL-STD-188-125-1A) and provide critical, technical comments and reports based on these observations with respect to military-standard compliance.
- Perform comprehensive technical reviews, assessments, and necessary edits of EMP-related technical documents (such as test plans, test reports, etc.) to assure the documents’ completeness, correctness, and clarity for DTRA and DTRA’s stakeholder community.
- Provide technical recommendations and assistance to DTRA and its stakeholders in creating or updating DoD military standards and associated military handbooks regarding EMP-protection requirements and best-practice guidance, which support nuclear-survivability policies and regulations for military systems.
- Participate in DTRA’s technical working groups regarding other EMP-related testing in the field or laboratory; technology designs, research, and development for advancing EMP hardness and hardness-testing; and EMP modeling-and-simulation (M&S) topics.
- Provide training to newer members of the EMP-protection/hardening technical community.
- Provide Leidos’ program management team with technical guidance and assistance for various associated functions, to include coordination with subcontractor personnel, tracking of document deliverables, participating in test-equipment inventory and inspections, etc.
Basic Qualifications:
- PhD or Master’s Degree with 11 years of applicable experience in an engineering or scientific discipline pertinent to nuclear phenomena, electromagnetism, and/or electrical systems.
- Possess knowledge regarding the substantiation and implementation of EMP-protection requirements per the following military standards: MIL-STD-2169D, MIL-STD-188-125-1A/-2A, MIL-STD-3023A, and MIL-STD-4023, and technical guidance per military handbook MIL-HDBK-423.
- Must be a U.S Citizen (no dual citizenship).
- Must have a Top Secret / SCI clearance or be able to obtain one prior to employment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in vulnerability studies for military systems from EMP environments, and potential means to protect such systems from these environments.
- Experience in observing EMP-protection tests of military systems and reporting observations.
- Experience collaborating with senior Government personnel in a program office environment, such as at a Government/military agency.
- Demonstrate professional skills in technical writing.
