Primary Function

The Athletic Field Painter is responsible for preparing, marking, and maintaining high-quality athletic field surfaces for a variety of sports and events. This role ensures all field markings are accurate, safe, compliant with league or organizational standards, and visually professional. The position requires strong attention to detail, knowledge of field dimensions, and the ability to operate specialized painting and turf-maintenance equipment.

Essential Duties
  • Measure, layout, and paint athletic field lines for sports such as football, soccer, baseball, softball, lacrosse, track, and multi-use fields.
  • Interpret and follow field marking diagrams, league regulations, and event specifications.
  • Operate and maintain field-painting equipment including striping machines, stencils, sprayers, and GPS-guided systems (if applicable).
  • Inspect playing surfaces to ensure proper layout, line clarity, and safety.
  • Coordinate field preparation schedules with coaches, tournament organizers, and facility staff.
  • Prepare fields for events, including placement of markers, numbers, logos, and boundary indicators.
  • Perform routine turf maintenance associated with field painting (removing old lines, spot turf repair, cleaning equipment).
  • Mix, load, and properly store paint and related materials according to safety guidelines.
  • Monitor field conditions and report any hazards, needed repairs, or supply shortages.
  • Assist groundskeeping staff with additional tasks as needed, including mowing, edging, irrigation support, and general field upkeep.
  • Uphold the department's commitment to customer service, professionalism, and campus/facility appearance.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience in athletic field layout or grounds maintenance preferred; training available for the right candidate.
  • Knowledge of field measurements and sport-specific field marking standards is a plus.
  • Ability to operate painting and grounds equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Strong attention to detail and spatial accuracy.
  • Ability to perform physical work in outdoor environments, including lifting up to 50 lbs, walking long distances, and working in various weather conditions.
  • Basic math skills for measuring and layout work.
  • Valid driver's license preferred (facility-dependent).
  • Strong equipment operation skills and mechanical aptitude

  • Effective communication with supervisors and coworkers
