The Boeing Company is currently seeking an Senior Composites Machining Technician to support our BTI Advanced Production & Automation (APA) team located in Tukwila, WA.
APA is a research and development organization focused on developing and production-hardening new automated manufacturing technologies for the fabrication and assembly of aircraft parts. This team begins with ideas and through hands on experiments, tests, and demonstrations develops these concepts into implementable equipment and processing solutions that support multiple programs across Boeing's platforms. In our state-of-the-art composites fabrication and robotic automation labs, our engineers and technical analysts lead and execute a variety of composites materials & fabrication development projects to transform ideas into reality. We work closely with the BTI Materials & Structures, BCA Product Development, and BCA Airplane Program teams to identify, develop and transition technology needs to Boeing products.
As a Senior Composites Machining Technician, you will work independently and collaborate with experienced peers to conduct hands-on composite manufacturing trials, fabricate test articles, and execute laboratory experiments to support the use of new materials, processes, and tools in the engineering and manufacture of products. The chosen candidate will be motivated, self-driven and will have excellent written and verbal communication skills. The ideal candidate will possess strong experience in the trimming, drilling, milling, hand machining, NC Programming, part fixturing, dimensional inspection, machining cutter & process development, and assembly of composite parts, subcomponents, and assemblies. Your work will be primarily performed on multi-axis milling machines (3 and 5 axis) machines. This is an on-site position and you will be expected to spend most of your time in the laboratory environment. We are a collaborative team and you will work with cross functional teammates including MP&P Engineers, Design & Structural Engineers, Quality Engineers & Inspectors, Test Engineers & Operators, Assembly mechanics, and support teams; a collaborative attitude and the willingness to work together are vital to our team's success. Position Responsibilities
- Contribute to a highly motivated team of engineers and technicians to fabricate test and manufacturing demonstration articles via NC Programming, Machining/trimming/drilling, and assembly of composite parts, sub-components and assemblies.
- Perform complex analysis and evaluation of machined parts & materials, machining/milling/drilling/trimming processes, technology, or equipment through research and testing to ensure safety, reliability and adherence to requirements and specifications.
- Leads, coordinates, and conducts complex analysis of failed parts and processes to reduce or eliminate future failures at Boeing and Boeing suppliers.
- Generates test plans, identifies, and categorizes failure, determines root cause and documents results and recommendations.
- Leads the proposal, development, and validation of revisions to procedures and specifications.
- Determines suitability of parts, materials and processes and coordinates resolution of complex issues with suppliers and customers.
- Supports continuous improvement of products and processes by leading the design, development, fabrication, testing, evaluation and implementation of new concepts and technology.
- Provides technical expertise, application knowledge and performance history to internal and external customers.
- Supports the training and development of others.
- Maintain clean and organized workspaces in accordance with labs housekeeping guidelines and 5S standards.
- Interface with engineers and leadership to showcase work being done.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/ Experience)
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or non-US equivalent qualifications directly related to the work statement
- 3+ years of experience with hands on machining and mechanical assembly and operations of metals, fiber reinforced composites and plastics
- 3+ years of experience reading and interpreting engineering documents and drawings
- 3+ years of experience working a laboratory environment
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)
- 3 and 5 Axis Programming and Machining
- 2 axis Lathe programming and machining
- Manual lathe and machining operations
- Design and assembly skills using CATIA, NX and/or SolidWorks
- Ability to utilize CATIA & Mastercam CAM Programming Software
- Metrolog or other measurement probing software
- Experience with Full Size to Full Size holes and Determinant Assembly processes
- Willingness to work in a dynamic setting with shifting daily priorities
