ABILITY TO LEAD OR SUPERVISE
1) Operating and navigating a small craft through traffic; 2) Maintaining the craft using prescribed maintenance plan; 3) Performing routine maintenance around the craft; 4) Providing assistance to the Ship's Pilots. The incumbent will be required to attend CNIC Shore Installation Management Basic Boat Coxswain (SIMBBC) course as a boat crew member and complete the Personal Qualification Standards for SIMBBC. Must qualify as 2 nd class swimmer or BST prior to taking this course.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The incumbent may be required to lift, carry, or pull up to 44 pounds while on underway craft. The incumbent must be able to climb vertical ladder, stairs, and endure prolonged standing, kneeling, bending, pulling, reaching, and must have good hand/finger dexterity. Incumbent must have the physical ability to handle mooring lines, fenders, anchors, and other similar equipment.
Must have vision in the normal range in both eyes with normal depth perception. Must have peripheral vision that will enable the incumbent to avoid falls and moving objects. Must be able to distinguish shades of color in order to see navigational aids and running lights of other vessels.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work is performed predominantly outside and aboard work boats/small craft or other waterborne craft in all kinds of weather and sea states. The work requires long periods of constant standing and walking. Subject to hot sun, spray, rain, sleet, and ice. Will be exposed to injury from falls due to slippery footing and erratic motion. Will be exposed to possible injury, strains, cuts, and bruises. Exposed to industrial noises generated by operating machinery and equipment with the possibility of hearing loss. Eye hazards will exist in most areas and/or in certain operations. Will be exposed to organic growth (such as sea growth, barnacles, and shellfish) in drydocks, saltwater systems, and other areas exposed to seawater. Will be required to use protective devices, clothing or equipment while exposed to adverse environment and hazardous work assignments.
The incumbent may be assigned to work areas where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present. These agents may include, but are not limited to, fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, etc. Incumbent may also be assigned to work areas where contact with sewage water is possible. To ensure employee safety and health, the CNRNW and PSNS & IMF maintain personnel protection programs consistent with applicable laws and regulations. These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personal protective equipment, and medical surveillance. As part of the medical surveillance programs, the incumbent will be required to take medical examinations to assess his/her medical qualifications and/or need for vaccination for duty involving work with these agents and/or possible contraction of disease.
SAFETY:
Incumbent is responsible for following all safe work practices, including the use of appropriate person protective equipment (PPE). The incumbent is required to perform the duties of this position with the highest level of attention to safety and health and will take the initiative to make the areas safe for themselves as well as those working around them. The incumbent is required to notify the supervisor as soon as possible, either verbally or in writing, of safety issues the incumbent is unable to correct.
May be required to work with hazardous materials such as fuel additives, paints, thinners, batteries, and corrosives. Employee is to follow all the Regional hazmat rules and regulations as directed. Incumbent is to handle, store, and dispose of all hazmat material according to all Regional rules, regulations, and directives.
