We are seeking a highly skilled Controls Engineer III to join our team in a 100% travel position supporting projects across various industries, including industrial controls, water/wastewater, power systems, and transportation. In this role, you will design, develop, install, and maintain advanced control and automation systems. You will serve as a technical expert in process control, instrumentation, PLCs, SCADA, and distributed control systems—delivering innovative solutions to complex customer needs.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Engineering
Develop design documents for small projects and contribute to large-scale programs.
Narrative design documents
Requirements analysis
Subsystem designs (CAD layouts, panels, wiring, hardware, SCADA screens, communications)
Preparation of specifications
Perform QA/QC and conduct detailed technical reviews.
Develop procedures and fixtures for integrated system factory testing.
Manage design-related comment resolution.
Programming
Lead programming/configuration efforts for complex automation and SCADA systems.
Program, configure, and troubleshoot PLCs, RTUs, HMIs, and related control devices.
Testing / Troubleshooting / Commissioning
Develop testing and commissioning procedures.
Prepare test reports and originate test documentation.
Execute factory acceptance testing (FAT) and field testing activities.
Commission deployed systems and create test fixtures/simulation tools.
Maintenance
Diagnose and resolve issues for existing and legacy systems.
Perform hardware/software upgrades and system replacements.
Managerial Responsibilities
Estimating
Conduct site surveys, inspections, and walkthroughs as needed.
Prepare cost estimates and documentation for small projects.
Support senior engineers in bid and proposal development.
Evaluate and price change orders.
Personnel Management
Assign and coordinate tasks with entry-level engineers and technical staff.
Support team leadership in project execution.
Field Experience
Ability to read and interpret electrical/control schematics and plans.
Hands-on experience with system startup, configuration, and calibration.
Strong troubleshooting skills for control systems and instrumentation.
Proficient with electrical and mechanical tools, calibration equipment, and industry-specific software.
Tools & Software
Experience with computer networks and industrial communication protocols.
Proficiency with CAD/CAE tools (AutoCAD, EPLAN).
Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, etc.).
Education / Licensure / Certification
Required Certifications
Certification in at least one PLC/automation platform (Schneider, Rockwell, Siemens, Niagara, etc.).
Certification in at least one SCADA platform (Wonderware, Iconics, Ignition, etc.).
Preferred Certifications
Design Build Institute of America (DBIA)
Certified SCADA Security Architect (CSSA)
Certified Automation Professional (CAP)
Engineer-in-Training (EIT)
Education & Experience
Master’s degree in Engineering and 3–5 years of relevant experience
OR
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 5–7 years of relevant experience
