Work Requirements
The USPS is looking for a Middleware Systems Engineer to provide day-to-day support for middle tier technologies, including web and application servers, containers and container management technologies, messaging technologies, cloud platform and services, automation tools, scripting languages and monitoring tools.
HOW A MIDDLEWARE SYSTEMS ENGINEER WILL MAKE AN IMPACT:
- Provide day to day incident and deployment support of multiple server operating systems, including Unix, Linux and Windows, which includes on-site and remote administration, user support, performance monitoring and tuning, and capacity planning.
- Provide day to day incident and deployment support of middle tier applications, including web and application servers, containers and container managers, messaging technologies, cloud platform and services, automation tools, scripting languages and monitoring tools.
- Develop growth plans as needed to ensure that the hosting environment can support the projected growth of the application environment.
- Create and maintain project plans as necessary in accordance with US Postal Service standards then keeps USPS management notified of critical failures or potential missed milestones.
- Uses security management systems and facilitates in backups and restores of data and application code.
- Provides weekly status reports and maintains hours worked on projects.
- Provides action plan for resolution of any/all faults detected and documents solutions to problems and document all application guidelines and issues.
- Performs isolation testing of problem equipment and/or software, analyzes and resolves complex hardware and software problems issues.
- Develop and implement procedures that support proactive problem detection and avoidance, including disaster recovery planning and implementation.
- Manage incident response via the USPS ServiceNow application in accordance with the published USPS Change Management Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and creates and documentation and trouble ticket systems to document equipment configurations, track changes and problems, and compiles performance data.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO SUCCEED:
Education:
- A degree from an accredited College/University in the applicable field of services is preferred.
- NOTE: If resources do not have a relevant college degree, an additional 4 years of relevant work experience is required.
Required Experience:
- 13+ years of technical experience, with a minimum of 5 years' experience in Middleware Administration in a distributed computing environment is preferred.
- USPS is seeking technical proficiency in 2 of the 3 skill areas listed below are required:
- - Middle Tier administration (Primary Focus Area) - The successful candidate will be able to support USPS implemented middle tier technologies, including web and application servers, containers and container management technologies, messaging technologies, cloud platform and services, automation tools, scripting languages and monitoring tools. Current technologies in use include Apache Tomcat, WildFly, Oracle Fusion Middle Tier (OFM), IBM WebSphere, Apache HTTP, Kubernetes, Docker and other types of containers, IBM MQ, Kafka, Zookeeper, RedHat OpenShift, RedHat 3scale Ansible, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, Linux shell scripting, Microsoft PowerShell, JYTHON, AppDynamics, Zabbix, SolarWinds, Zabbix, SolarWinds, Neustar and Splunk.
- - Unix/Linux Server Administration - Administer servers running the Unix and/or Linux operating system in a large, multi-datacenter environment. They will be expected to regularly exercise independent judgment, as well as high-level of analytic skill, in solving complex technical problems for the USPS in the Linux Server and Virtual ESX environment. This individual serves as the focal point for problem resolution by interacting with USPS employees and (multiple) equipment and application vendors to ensure proper application installation and operation, and problem resolution. The individual will also serve as the trainer and mentor to other Linux Administrators at various times. This individual will be expected to work independently with a minimum of guidance or direction.
- - Windows Server Administration - Perform complex functional activities in support of servers running the Windows server operating system for the USPS. They will be expected to regularly exercise independent judgment, as well as high level of analytic skill, in solving complex technical problems for the USPS in the Windows Server and Virtual ESX environment. This individual serves as the focal point for problem resolution by interacting with USPS employees and (multiple) equipment and application vendors to ensure proper application installation and operation, and problem resolution. The individual will also serve as the trainer and mentor to the other Windows Administrator position at various times. This individual will be expected to work independently with a minimum of guidance or direction.
Desired Technical Skills:
- Apache Tomcat, WildFly, Oracle Fusion Middle Tier (OFM).
- IBM WebSphere, Apache HTTP, Kubernetes, Docker and other types of containers.
- IBM MQ, Kafka, Zookeeper, RedHat OpenShift, RedHat 3scale Ansible, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure.
- Service Now ticket management experience.
- Linux shell scripting, Microsoft PowerShell, JYTHON, AppDynamics, Zabbix, SolarWinds, Zabbix, SolarWinds, Neustar and Splunk.
Security Clearance Level:
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust and successfully pass a thorough Government background screening process requiring the completion of detailed forms and fingerprinting
- This position has a U.S. residency requirement. The USPS security clearance process requires the selected candidate to have resided in the U.S. (including U.S. Territories) for the last five years as follows: U.S. Citizens cannot have left the U.S. (including U.S. Territories) for longer than 6 months consecutively in the last 3 years (unless they meet certain exceptions). Non-U.S. Citizens cannot have left the U.S. (including U.S. Territories) for longer than 90 days consecutively in the last 3 years.
