Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist

This position requires an active Public Trust clearance.

A government contract requires that this position be restricted to U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. You must provide documentation that you are a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident to qualify.

Provide cartographical expertise to support assigned GIS projects through application of professional knowledge and skill in cartographical practices, processes, and techniques.

Compensation & Benefits:

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist: $65,000.00-$70,000.00. Pay commensurate with experience.

Full time benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K and other possible benefits as provided. Benefits are subject to change with or without notice.

Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist Responsibilities Include:
  • The Contractor shall be responsible for all facets of Project Development including, but not limited to:
    • Review of initial requests for work
    • Investigation of customer requirements as well as other requests and deficiencies in the facility
    • Development of scope of work and preliminary estimates
    • Overseas a variety of GIS related programs and Data Steward Programs
    • Inputs drawings to S-file and floor Plan Data in GIS/dBase formatted output
    • Ensures floor plans are updated annually by addition of any space changes and inclusion of new facilities
    • Reviews and verifies data prior to notifying Real Estate date is available for their review to add proper Real Estate codes to the new areas and forward the file to Headquarters
    • Ensures data collection is promptly transferred to the GIS system
    • Provides support to base GIS users by installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of base GIS software and specialized hardware
    • Monitors base GIS system to identify and recommend areas where system improvements of hardware/software could improve performance of the system
    • Maintains record of GIS related software remains under license and always available
    • Provides own assessment of situations and recommends means of modifying the programs, use of alternative methods or equipment, or other by-pass techniques to accomplish the goals.
    • When unusual problems arise, explains the situation to proper expert and if required request professional assistance with system programming or analysis if required
    • Provides extensive cartographical expertise to support assigned GIS projects through application of professional knowledge and skill in cartographical practices, processes, and techniques
    • Uses broad CAD/GIS expertise to develop unique applications of cartographic/CAD theory/principles to solve both short and long range problems for the base GeoBase mapping system concerning base development, facility engineering, and day-to-day operations and maintenance management activities
    • Verifies each Base GIS layer and Base Tab maps are correctly populated with required data, and they are maintained in up-to-date manner
    • Evaluates each user request to determine the best format for analysis/display and ensures inclusion of appropriate data to fulfill the request
    • Ensures all Headquarters requests for data calls or improvements to GIS system receive top priority and meets established completion deadlines
    • Continually evaluates system configuration to identify better avenues to optimize GIS for presentation to and for use by base populace
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:
  • A degree in Cartography or Geography or a GIS Certificate required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience performing the work/tasks detailed above is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Utilizing and applying computer software including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly, work independently, and deliver results within deadlines.
  • Strong command of the English language for presenting analytical results.
  • Excellent collaboration, organizational, and attention to detail skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic and multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal.
