Duties
- Serves as crew chief/jet engine specialist of assigned aircraft, responsible for performing, coordinating, and/or overseeing maintenance on the aircraft. Responsible for the total airworthiness of the assigned aircraft.
- Performs aircraft maintenance and inspections including preflight, postflight, thru flight, and other scheduled and unscheduled inspections.
- Diagnoses and identifies probable locations of malfunctions from the cockpit resulting from in-flight operations and ground engine run-up. Progressively engages or turns on all systems operated by cockpit controls.
- Initiates requests for tools, equipment, and materials during preparation for flight
- Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work area.

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8800 Aircraft Overhaul Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of AIRCRAFT MECHANIC without more than normal supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of the theory, operation, and integration of all mechanical, pneudraulic/hyd, electrical, electronic, and other operating systems of a variety of aircraft.
2. Knowledge of the startup, operation, shutdown, and emergency procedures for the systems and the aircraft; symptoms of normal and abnormal operation; and the inter-relationships between operating systems.
3. Knowledge of associated trades such as aircraft electrical, electronics, and pneudraulic/hyd work.
4. Knowledge of the removal, installation, operation and repair of aircraft engines and accessory systems.
5. Ability to diagnose aircraft engine, component, and/or subassembly malfunctions and determine methods of repair.
6. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures. Knowledge of supply procedures, the publication order system, and documentation procedures.
Physical Effort:
Heavy lifting (45-79 pounds) and heavy carrying (45 lbs. and over). Use of fingers and both hands required. Hoists, hand trucks, lifts, and other employees are available to assist when handling heavy or awkward items. Climbing, use of legs and arms. Both legs required. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable at 13 inches to 16 inches to Jaeger 1 to 4. Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other. Ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing (aid permitted). Specific hearing requirement is must meet H1 hearing profile IAW applicable regulations. Audiogram required. Some work may require the aid of magnifying lenses, eye loops, and microscopes to accomplish repairs on miniature components. Pushes heavy jacks and test stands, stoops, bends, stretches, and works in cramped, tiring, and uncomfortable positions. Additional functional requirements include Emotional and mental stability required. Subject to climbing on aircraft and maintenance stands and working in strained and awkward positions. May be required to climb steps and ladders and stand on slippery or inclined surfaces. If it can be otherwise accommodated a specific physical condition or impairment will not automatically disqualify a candidate.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed indoors, outdoors, and in aircraft in all weather conditions. Excessive hazardous noise levels. Working around machinery with moving parts. Working around moving objects and/or vehicles. Working on ladders or scaffolding. Stands on concrete or hard composition floors for long periods of time. Working closely with others. Working alone. Lethal electrical shock. Slippery or uneven walking surfaces. Vibration. Exposed to toxic fumes, dirt, solvents (decreasing agents), grease, and aircraft fluids, oils, and hydraulic fluids. May be exposed to intake suction and hot exhaust blast. Employee is in danger of injury by falling from aircraft, work stands, or slips on oily floors; falling objects, cuts, bruises, scrapes, fumes, smoke, gases, fuels, shocks, strains, or skin and eye irritations. Additional environmental factors include: Working with cryogenic fluids and pressurized pneumatic systems. May be required to work at extreme heights performing tests, repairs, or inspections. Heights may exceed 65 feet. May be required to work from mobile maintenance platforms and must work in confined spaces and in awkward positions.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
