We are seeking a highly experienced Database Specialist to provide expert-level technical support in planning, configuring, implementing, and maintaining a major legacy database vendor's suite of products (Software AG's (SAG) ADABAS) within an enterprise z/OS mainframe environment. This role is critical to the reliability, security, and performance of mission-critical clustered database services, ensuring high availability and continuous operations for core business objectives.
The specialist will be expected to lead initiatives in disaster recovery, performance tuning, system optimization, and regulatory compliance, while providing technical guidance to DBAs, project management offices (PMOs), and system design staff.

We are seeking a highly experienced Database Specialist to provide expert-level technical support in planning, configuring, implementing, and maintaining a major legacy database vendor's suite of products (Software AG's (SAG) ADABAS) within an enterprise z/OS mainframe environment. This role is critical to the reliability, security, and performance of mission-critical clustered database services, ensuring high availability and continuous operations for core business objectives.
The specialist will be expected to lead initiatives in disaster recovery, performance tuning, system optimization, and regulatory compliance, while providing technical guidance to DBAs, project management offices (PMOs), and system design staff.
? Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan, install, configure, customize, and implement the legacy database vendor's software products, including Clustering Services, Online Services (AOS), mainframe security integration (e.g., SAF), and associated tools.
- Plan, configure, and implement database support for structured/unstructured data, SQL access, related procedural languages (e.g., Natural), and security features.
- Plan and execute comprehensive disaster recovery strategies for the database system and related products, including offsite restoration.
- Manage and create table spaces, assist other DBAs with parameter settings, and optimize database structures for efficiency.
- Configure and optimize Database Clustering Services, add-on tools, and high-capacity processing support (e.g., Nucleus 64-bit processing).
- Implement buffering strategies for data and indexes in main memory to reduce CPU consumption and improve performance.
- Monitor, analyze, and tune database performance, including reporting resource consumption through system management facilities (e.g., SMF).
- Support compliance with audits, regulatory requirements, and enterprise change control processes.
- Provide technical assistance to PMO DBMS programming and systems design staff.
- Troubleshoot and perform dump analysis of legacy procedural programs (e.g., Natural programs) and resolve database performance issues.
- Plan and perform migrations or conversions of the legacy software suite to other enterprise platforms such as DB2 or Oracle.
- Support z/OS operating system parameters and CICS Transaction Server tuning for optimal database performance in CICSPlex environments.
- Automate database startup/shutdown using enterprise automation tools (e.g., Tivoli System Automation for z/OS or compatible).
- Apply vendor software fixes and updates, ensuring operational continuity.
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 12 years of experience installing, implementing, maintaining, and supporting the vendor's ADABAS database systems.
- Minimum of 5 years of recent experience with ADABAS database software on z/OS.
- Recent hands-on experience with ADABAS Cluster Services in IBM z/OS Parallel Sysplex environments.
- Experience with ADABAS Suspend/Resume in support of Point-in-Time copy functionality.
- Proficiency with the vendor's product suite, including modeling tools (e.g., PREDICT), monitoring tools (e.g., REVIEW DB, REVIEW Natural Monitor), Security modules (e.g., Natural Security), optimization tools (e.g., Natural Optimizer Compiler), development tools (e.g., Natural Construct), Native SQL, and Online Services (AOS).
- Experience developing and implementing disaster recovery procedures for ADABAS environments.
- Demonstrated ability to monitor and tune ADABAS databases, optimize CPU utilization, and maintain high availability.
- Experience supporting CICS Natural applications in CICSPlex configurations.
- Strong background in maintaining z/OS operating systems and IBM CICS parameters for optimal ADABAS performance.
- Hands-on experience with vendor software migrations and applying released fixes/updates.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide technical consultation and training.
- Successful completion of a Public Trust background investigation and/or a Public Trust clearance.
- Minimum Citizenship Status Required: Must be a U.S. Citizen.
