Position Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Network Engineer to support the design, implementation, and sustainment of secure, high-performance network infrastructure supporting distributed defense operations.

This position is contingent upon your ability to maintain/transfer an active DoD Top Secret security clearance.

The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring cybersecurity, operational readiness, and seamless data communication across mission-critical environments. This role requires hands-on expertise with specialized networking and security technologies, a deep understanding of DoD security protocols, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, demanding environment.

In this role, you will:
  • Network Design and Implementation:
    • Support development and configuring secure and scalable network architectures that meet current and future mission requirements, including LAN, WAN, WLAN, VPN, and tactical networking solutions.
    • Support planning, designing, and executing network upgrades and expansions, ensuring minimal disruption to critical operations.
    • Collaborate with other IT teams (e.g., systems administration, cybersecurity) to ensure seamless integration of network services and compliance with security policies.
  • Secure Network Sustainment:
    • Proactively monitor network performance and security posture using specialized tools (e.g., SolarWinds, intrusion detection systems, SIEM platforms) to identify potential issues and vulnerabilities.
    • Respond to network incidents and outages, performing root cause analysis and implement effective solutions to restore services quickly and securely.
    • Perform regular network maintenance tasks, including firmware updates, configuration backups, security patching, and performance tuning.
  • Security Management and Compliance:
    • Implement and maintain network security protocols and best practices, including firewalls (Cisco ASA, Palo Alto Networks, etc.), intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), VPNs, and access control mechanisms.
    • Enforce DoD Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) to harden network devices and configurations.
    • Conduct regular security assessments and vulnerability scans to identify and address potential security weaknesses.
    • Stay up to date on the latest cybersecurity threats and vulnerabilities, and implement appropriate countermeasures.
  • Specialized Equipment Management:
    • Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot TACLANE encryptors to ensure secure data transmission across classified networks.
    • Manage Video Teleconferencing (VTC) systems, ensuring reliable and secure communication capabilities.
  • Coalition Exercise Support:
    • Support the setup and maintenance of network connectivity during joint exercises with allied forces, ensuring secure and interoperable communication.
  • Documentation:
    • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation of network configurations, diagrams, processes, security protocols, and changes using standard documentation tools.
    • Follow network standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistent and secure network operations and support updates.
    • Document troubleshooting steps and resolutions for future reference and knowledge sharing.
  • User Support and Training:
    • Provide Tier 2/3 technical support to end-users and IT staff on network-related issues.
    • Deliver training materials and sessions to educate staff on network systems, protocols, security awareness, and the proper use of secure communication tools.
    • Collaborate with the help desk team to resolve escalated network issues and provide guidance on common troubleshooting steps.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • An active Top Secret security clearance.
  • An Associates degree in Information Technology, or a related field. Equivalent experience may be considered.
    • DoD IAT Level 2
  • 2 or more years of experience in network engineering, with a focus on security and DoD environments.
  • The following Technical Expertise:
    • Strong understanding of networking protocols and technologies, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP), VLANs, VPNs, QoS, and MPLS.
    • Proven experience with Cisco hardware and software, including routers, switches, firewalls (Cisco ASA, Palo Alto Networks), and wireless controllers.
    • Hands-on experience configuring and troubleshooting network devices using command-line interfaces (CLI).
    • Experience with network monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds, PRTG, Nagios) and packet analysis tools (e.g., Wireshark).
    • Proficiency with Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) for VoIP management.
    • Working knowledge of virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V).
  • The following DoD Security Experience:
    • Strong understanding of DoD security policies, regulations, and STIGs.
    • Experience with implementing and maintaining network security controls in a DoD environment.
    • Hands-on experience with TACLANE encryptors (KG-175D, KG-175F or similar models).
  • The following certifications: CCNA or CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional) or (preferred) or other relevant certifications (e.g., CISSP) are highly preferred.
  • To demonstrate the ability to analyze complex network issues, develop effective solutions quickly, and document the resolution process.
  • An excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • The ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and contribute to the overall success of the IT department.
  • The ability to adapt to changing priorities and technologies in a fast-paced environment.


Additional desired experience and skills:

  • Experience with cloud networking (AWS, Azure, GCP) in a secure environment.
  • Experience with network automation tools (Ansible, Python) for security configuration and management.
  • Experience with SD-WAN technologies.
  • Familiarity with ITIL framework.
  • Experience with SIEM platforms (e.g., Splunk, QRadar).
