Northrop Grumman's Aeronautics Systems (NGAS) Sector is looking for a Director, Programs 2 to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals to lead the newly formed Research & Advanced Design (R&AD) Division Battle Management Business Unit. This new role will lead a key element of R&AD's mission for NGAS - leading Sector technology development in battle management architectures, autonomy, and automation that benefits current and future programs for our partner Divisions in NGAS.

This leadership position can be based in Redondo Beach, California, El Segundo, California, San Diego, California, or Melbourne, Florida with frequent travel to other NGAS sites and customer locations throughout the United States.

In this role the candidate will report directly to the Sector Vice President of R&AD and will oversee our Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2) Operating Unit, Battlespace Architectures Systems and Technologies (BAST) Operating Unit, and our Advanced Autonomy Operating Unit. Each of these Operating Units have an extensive and growing IRAD and CRAD portfolio that drive key technology differentiators into our aeronautics platforms across NGAS.

Success in this role includes achieving TRL / MRL advancement goals for investments in IRAD, increasing numbers of key tech insertions into NGAS programs, and executing the 10-year NGAS platform technology roadmap associated with battle management architectures and platform and mission autonomy. This role will partner closely with our counterpart NGAS Division business development, production, and program management teams to establish and execute the NGAS platform technology roadmaps that support current and future aeronautics lines of business.

Relationship management, capture and technology portfolio acumen, and unquestionable integrity and transparency are vital skills necessary for success in this role. This leadership position will manage a matrixed and direct-report workforce deployed to multiple sites across the continental United States, coordinate closely with R&AD and NGAS counterpart Business Units.

Primary responsibilities are oversight of all technology development and insertion efforts associated with JADC2, battle management architectures, autonomy, and automation in R&AD and management of the JADC2, BAST, and Advanced Autonomy Operating Units, including but not limited to:
  • Cultivating customer relationships and intimacy to develop autonomy and battle management architectures that align with emerging mission needs
  • Representing Northrop Grumman in industry standard formation consortiums
  • Developing winning business deals for customer-funded research & development efforts that support NGAS technology roadmaps
  • Identifying early customer funding opportunities for advancement of technology maturation efforts that align with future requirements
  • Optimizing a program organization for lean operations that effectively addresses customer requirements and incorporates the necessary internal and external sub-organizations
  • Leading and directing cross-functional Integrated Program Teams (IPT) to meet internally and externally funded program cost, schedule, and technical performance objectives
  • Driving predictable program performance, including regular measurement and management of key performance metrics
  • Delivering presentations to customers, executive management, and other program stakeholders
  • Identifying, allocating and managing program resources, including workforce planning
  • Participating in the negotiation of contracts, contract changes, specifications, operating budgets, schedule milestones, and key terms and conditions
  • Development and adherence to program, business, and technical baselines
  • Ensuring program team understands and adheres to contract scope, and manages change through control board activities, and drives performance towards technology insertion milestones
  • Managing Government/customer supplied property or information (GFE, CFE, etc.)
  • Establishing relationships with new suppliers and managing those suppliers to meet program objectives

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering and 12 years or Master's degree in engineering and 10 years of related professional / military technical development experience in the defense industry
  • Extensive development and deployment background in model-based systems engineering and software engineering for aeronautics platforms
  • Deep understanding of defense communication systems, battle management architectures, artificial intelligence and machine learning applied to aircraft flight-critical and mission autonomy
  • Experience managing small businesses in time-constrained development effort supply chains
  • Experience working with executives and senior leaders and leading teams to achieve a common goal in a dynamic w ork environment
  • Must have an active DoD Top Secret/SCI clearance with a background investigation completed within the last 6 years or currently enrolled into continuous evolution
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Special Program Access (SAP) within a reasonable amount of time as determined by business needs


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's or PhD in aerospace engineering, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or systems engineering with advanced industry experience in technology trend identification and roadmap development
  • Background in marketing and capture management in standards establishment industry consortiums
  • Technical leadership experience at a startup or small technical development firm
  • Profit & loss responsibility with demonstrated ability to achieve financial performance targets in emerging and competitive markets
  • The ability to address uncertainty through an organized and analytical forward-looking approach
  • Successful leadership of critical time-constrained technology insertion efforts


Salary ranges:

Florida (Melbourne) : 223,300.00 - 334,900.00

California (El Segundo, Redondo Beach, San Diego) : 258,600.00 - 387,800.00

Primary Level Salary Range: $223,300.00 - $387,800.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
