They should possess expert-level ability in not just using, but developing, high-fidelity, multi-domain models and simulations from first principles. Advanced proficiency in Cameo is highly desired, including experience creating detailed system architectures, conducting trade studies, and managing requirements directly within the MBSE environment. The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. As a Senior Systems Design Engineer...
- You will utilize digital engineering tools, physics/logistics/models/simulations to analyze weapon system capabilities, architectures, designs, Government and Contractor models, and to assist in the development and analysis of current and future weapon systems.
- Your primary responsibility will be to provide extensive and detailed engineering thought leadership and expertise focusing on architecture and analysis, technology and design assessment, system and performance modeling, risk and reliability assessments, and related critical analysis of test & evaluation efforts for strategic deterrent systems.
- Using digital tools and engineering models, you will:
- Conduct or participate in the technical and engineering analysis and review of technical work products, designs, change proposals, and proposed capability enhancements.
- Provide engineering domain expertise while leading/coordinating research, studies, and analysis on current and future weapons system capabilities and performances as well as provide supporting data and associated recommendations to advise program sponsors.
- Deliver formal presentations to sponsors and supporting contractors, and effectively communicate proposed concepts/solutions and analysis results. You will produce reports that bring together concept definitions, requirements, analysis results, and technical recommendations.
- Core Expectations:
- You are an “engineer’s engineer”. Candidate must possess a proven track record of significant engineering design experience with a deeply technical foundation in the application and integration of multiple disciplines. This includes the demonstrable use of physics-based models, logistics-based analysis, applied statistics, materials science, and advanced mathematics to define, analyze, and solve complex problems. Candidates must have a working knowledge of formal Systems Engineering principles and methodologies, as well as hands-on, working knowledge of Cameo for Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Have a Bachelor's degree in engineering, mathematics, physics or related technical field.
- Have extensive and direct responsibility and experience in producing deeply technical designs or conducting design and engineering analysis or similar evaluation of complex and integrated systems.
- Are highly knowledgeable regarding Systems Engineering practices, standards, tools, and methods.
- Have working knowledge of Cameo, Magic Draw, Rhapsody, or other MBSE tools.
- Have significant experience developing or enhancing physics-based/logistic/statistical or related engineering models and simulations to conduct engineering analysis.
- Have especially strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong critical thinking skills.
- Have shown the ability to interact effectively with and lead multi-disciplinary teams, including industry and government sponsors.
- Are willing and able to travel periodically, including short duration visits to sponsor offices at the Washington Navy Yard and to supporting contractor sites, as well as occasional travel to other military bases across the country.
- Hold an active Secret security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain TS/SCI level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

- Have experience in systems engineering for missile systems.
- Have experience with DoD acquisition processes, Navy Strategic Systems programs, and/or Air Force ICBM programs.
- Are a subject matter expert in one or more MBSE tools such as Cameo (preferred), Rhapsody, MagicDraw, and DOORS.
- Have experience with new DoD program development to include concept development and Pre-Milestone A activities.
- Have engineering knowledge of one or more strategic weapons systems.
