Job Description

The Building People, LLC, has a position open for a full-time Network Specialist - Department of Defense. The Network Specialist designs, implements, and defends networks supporting facility and operational technology environments for Industrial Control Systems such as UMCS, ESS, FAS, SCADA, and metering. Responsibilities include architecture and segmentation, routing and switching, firewall and VPN configuration, access control and authentication services, monitoring and incident support, documentation, and compliance with applicable DoD cybersecurity requirements. This role supports a Department of Defense mission and collaborates with cybersecurity, systems engineering, and field teams to deliver secure, reliable connectivity.

Skills & Requirements

Required Experience & Skills

  • Experience designing and operating routed and switched networks for OT/ICS environments, including VLANs/VRFs, inter-VLAN routing, and site-to-site connectivity.
  • Hands-on configuration of firewalls, routers, and Layer 3 switches (ACLs, NAT, VPNs, IPsec/SSL, high availability).
  • Network access control experience (802.1X/MAB), RADIUS/TACACS+, and certificate/PKI basics.
  • Implementation of monitoring and detection: syslog, NetFlow, SNMP, IDS/IPS, and SIEM integration.
  • Familiarity with ICS protocols and security considerations such as BACnet and Modbus, and PPS allowlisting at boundaries.
  • Experience applying DISA STIGs/SRGs, secure baseline configurations, and maintaining hardened images.
  • Coordination of vulnerability scanning and remediation (e.g., ACAS) and patch management windows appropriate for ICS.
  • Ability to produce network diagrams, IP plans, inventories, and as-built documentation; support CDRLs and turnover packages.
  • Proficiency with troubleshooting tools such as Wireshark and vendor diagnostics; basic scripting or automation is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills for coordination with stakeholders and preparation of technical documentation.
  • Ability to travel to active project sites, including secure facilities.
  • Must meet DoDD 8570.01 and DoD 8570-M requirements for IAT Level 1 or 2, or IASAE Level 1 or 2, OR meet requirements for a CND role (CND-A, CND-IS, CND-IR, or CND-AU).


Preferred Experience & Skills

  • Vendor certifications such as CCNA/CCNP, PCNSE, JNCIS/JNCIP, Fortinet NSE, or equivalent; experience with Cisco ISE or comparable NAC platforms.
  • GICSP, GRID, or ISA/IEC 62443 credentials.
  • Experience implementing Zero Trust principles for OT networks, DMZ architectures, and jump/bastion solutions.
  • Experience with time synchronization for control systems (NTP/PTP), out-of-band management networks, and industrial Ethernet switches.
  • Prior experience on federal task order contracts for facility modernization or control systems programs.
  • Required Education
  • Bachelor's degree in information technology, network engineering, computer science, or related discipline, or equivalent experience.


Preferred Education

  • Advanced degree in a related field or additional graduate certificate work in cybersecurity or network engineering.


Clearance
  • Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance.


Travel
  • Minimum 25% to job sites CONUS and OCONUS as required by task orders.
