Astrion is seeking a part-time, casual Parachute Rigger to support a limited number of high-altitude balloon flight operations for the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Space Vehicles Directorate . This role is crucial in ensuring the readiness, rigging, and performance of parachute systems for safe payload recovery after balloon termination. This is a hands-on, field-focused role supporting a small team during launch campaigns. It's ideal for individuals with prior parachute rigging experience-especially military-trained riggers-who are looking to contribute to cutting-edge aerospace research on a flexible, short-term basis.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS
- Prior military or equivalent experience in parachute rigging, packing, and inspection
- Demonstrated proficiency with parachute train setup, including reefing systems, chute dump mechanisms, and backup recovery systems
- Experience with or knowledge of AF Balloon Program standards and operations
- Familiarity with AF and FAA regulations related to balloon flight and recovery
- Comfortable working in fast-paced, field-based environments including remote recovery locations
- Ability to lift, carry, and manipulate rigging equipment under varying conditions
- Willingness to support additional launch activities as required by the crew chief
- Strong attention to detail and safety procedures in high-risk environments
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS
- Active Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain
- Current Parachute Rigger Certification (military or civilian equivalent)
- Experience supporting high-altitude balloon operations or aerospace test ranges
- Strong communication skills and ability to operate effectively in a small, mission-focused team
- Comfortable with field travel and irregular hours during launch and recovery windows
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Acquire , rig, and check out the full parachute train for both primary and backup systems in accordance with AFRL and FAA standards
- Maintain, inspect, and service all parachute systems to ensure optimal readiness and safety
- Collaborate with the recovery team to perform safe and efficient recovery of balloon payloads
- Assist in ground operations, setup, and other launch-related tasks as directed by the crew chief
- Adhere to all AFRL safety protocols , equipment handling standards, and recovery procedures
- Maintain detailed records of rigging procedures, maintenance logs, and operational readiness checks
- Support training and safety briefings for new team members or mission-specific changes
