Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) is seeking a Mechanical Materials Manager 1 with the desire to learn new technologies to join our innovative Software Technologies Organization to help develop, enhance and maintain software on cutting edge products and systems. Candidates will lead a team of multidisciplinary engineers in the identification, development, and execution of increased performance through enhanced material characterization development.

We are looking for you to join our team as a Mechanical Materials Manager 1 based out of Linthicum, MD.

Summary of Role:

As a Mechanical Materials Manager within the Materials Analysis Organization you will have a challenging and rewarding opportunity to be a part of our Enterprise-wide digital transformation. This team is responsible for understanding the material performance requirements needed of the hardware design community to identify opportunities for the development of proprietary materials to reach these increased installed performance requirements. The team will also support RCCA investigations through the support of the materials and processes engineers by participating in test plan development and consulting on how the mechanical hardware incorporates into the system.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Managing a functional group comprised of approximately 5-8 electromechanical engineers of varying experience levels, including performance management, merit planning, job assignment management/prioritization, career development, new employee onboarding and coaching.
  • Engaging the functional team with timely flow-down of information and fostering robust collaboration within the team.
  • Identify opportunities for material development to support increased performance efforts.
  • Develop proposals for internal material development, plan and manage schedule and budget, and oversee development of proprietary materials.
  • Developing and maintaining a working knowledge of applicable internal and industry processes, guidelines, policies, and best practices, and ensuring that all functional team members are aware of and are compliant with these items.
  • Supporting and leading department initiatives, which could include process improvement, workforce engagement, talent recruiting and interviewing, training material development, technology roadmap development, cross-organization collaboration, etc.


This position is contingent upon the successful transfer of an active DoD Secret Clearance and the ability to obtain Special Program Access (SAP) prior to start.

Basic Qualifications for a Mechanical Materials Manager 1:

Bachelor's Degree with 5 years of experience, master's degree with 3 years of experience, Ph.D. with 1 years of experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics or related technical fields; an additional 4 years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • U.S Citizenship is required
  • Active DoD Secret Clearance required.
  • The ability to obtain Special Program Access (SAP) prior to start.
  • 2 years of demonstrated success leading, collaborating, and building teams on complex technical projects
  • 5 years of experience of material selection, process development, fabrication, and testing of absorber, adhesive, etc. materials and specialty coatings for various applications


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated success in functional management, project management, or similar technical leadership role.
  • Experience working on quick turn development projects and the RAPID process
  • Working knowledge of innovative mechanical design, manufacturing, and testing for Installed Performance (IP) of Active Electronically Scanned Arrays (AESAs)
  • Knowledge of material selection, process development, fabrication, and testing of absorber, adhesive, etc. materials and specialty coatings for various applications
  • Self-motivated, proactive, organized and detail oriented. Excellent verbal and written communication, time management and organizational skills.

Primary Level Salary Range: $112,600.00 - $169,000.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
