Responsibilities

The individual selected for this position will serve as the Engineering Branch Manager for the Mission Assurance Support Contract, reporting directly to the Program Manager. This contract provides launch vehicle Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) analyses across various engineering disciplines including flight mechanics, flight controls, thermal/propulsion, loads & dynamics, structures, and flight software in support of mission integration and mission assurance activities for National Security Space Launch (NSSL) launch vehicles including Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, Vulcan, and potentially other New Entrant launch vehicles. This specific position requires expertise in Flight Mechanics, Flight Controls, and/or Thermal/Propulsion Analysis of Aerospace vehicles such as launch vehicles, spacecraft or aircraft. Specific roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Programmatic responsibilities:

  • Support internal programmatic meetings and actions.
  • Plan and maintain labor/staffing budgets for Flight Mechanics, Flight Controls, and Thermal/Propulsion groups
  • Support coordination of staff computer hardware & software / travel needs
  • Support and/or coordinate external technical meetings.
  • Support miscellaneous PM (Program Manager) tasks as requested.
  • Develop and maintain IV&V schedules for Tool Development and non-recurring and mission specific IV&V.
  • Support and present at external programmatic meetings.
  • Support proposals and budget planning as required/requested.

Personnel management responsibilities:

  • Direct work assignments of Flight Mechanics, Flight Controls, and Thermal/Propulsion engineers.
  • Perform annual performance reviews of Flight Mechanics, Flight Controls, and Thermal/Propulsion engineers.
  • Review and approve weekly timecards.
  • Conduct weekly or biweekly staff meetings with staff as appropriate.
  • Recruit and hire qualified engineers as required.
  • Coordinate employee training and professional development.

Technical responsibilities:

  • Manage IV&V task planning and execution for Flight Mechanics, Flight Controls, and Thermal/Propulsion tasks.
  • Direct and approve technical documentation efforts of staff.
  • Oversee and coordinate IV&V tool development.
  • Support technical (and programmatic) meetings and report technical status, findings, and results.

Additional desired skills:

  • Fundamental knowledge in Flight Mechanics, Flight Controls, and Thermal/Propulsion
  • Past experience in Flight Mechanics, Flight Controls, and/or Thermal/Propulsion analyses/simulations including code, model, and methodology development.
  • Prior experience with or familiarity with numerical simulation codes such as MATLAB, C++, Fortran, etc.
  • Experience and/or training using Microsoft office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Expertise using scheduling software such as Microsoft Project.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Must have a 12-15 years of applicable work experience with a Bachelors of Science in a related field. 10-13 years of applicable work experience with a Master's of Science in a related field. 10+ years of applicable work experience with a PhD in a related field.
  • Prior leadership or management experience of an engineering team.
  • Ability to independently organize and direct small teams of engineers to analyze, document, and present findings both to internal and external customers.
  • Training/experience in Flight Mechanics, or Flight Controls, or Thermal/Propulsion analyses of aerospace vehicles; particularly for space and/or launch vehicles.
  • Candidates should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Clearance Requirement: Candidate must possess and have the ability to maintain an active DoD Secret level security clearance. Must also have the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance.
