Position Description
As a Senior Data Scientist, you will support our Maritime Engineering, Technology & Sustainment (METS) Business Unit which is responsible for industry-leading capabilities in naval ship and submarine design, systems and engineering services, and production support, logistics and in-service sustainment.
This position is contingent upon your ability to obtain/maintain/transfer an active DoD Secret security clearance.
This position complements Serco's other engineering capabilities in shipboard, shore and systems installation and upgrade services to the Navy. You will join a team that is responsible for a multitude of various design efforts using software development tools which will include different US Navy Programs and contracts, as well as commercial vessels and systems. In your role, you will be utilizing a variety of different tools and software programs possibly involving disparate databases and software applications. You will also assist in the preparation of reports to describe your analysis and design efforts and being responsible for summarizing results for customers and higher authorities.

In this role, you will:
- Perform ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) operations on multiple data sources and data types across multiple types of databases with various access controls. Data types include text documents, text documents with figures and plots, drawings in different formats, e.g., MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio) and PDFs (documents, drawings).
- The documents are related to USN Requirements which are managed in IBM DOORS NextGen.
- Develop and apply natural language processing (NLP), machine learning, and potentially Large Language Models (LLMs), e.g., GPT, RAG, BERT, to documents and data.

Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- A United States citizenship and able to obtain a DoD Secret security clearance.
- A Bachelor of Science in Data Science or equivalent degree from an accredited university.
- At least 5 years of industry experience spanning:
- Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) operations on multiple types of databases and data categories; experience with Sharepoint, MS 365, SQL, and Power Platform.
- Experience developing and applying natural language processing tools and machine learning tools to find, parse, and extract patterns or targeted data sets.
- Knowledge of some or all of these Python libraries/frameworks: nltk, spacy, pandas, scikit-learn, seaborn, NumPy, scikit-learn, matplotlib, PyTorch, Stanford Core NLP.
- To be self-motivated with a strong work initiative and attention to detail.
- A strong customer service, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- To be able to work and collaborate with multiple engineering disciplines across multiple disciplines and basic understanding of physical systems technical requirements.
- To be proficient in programming languages (one of the following): SQL, R, or Python.
- The ability to work independently, spot opportunities to streamline tasks, and make recommendations.
- To be skilled at presenting findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- The ability to travel 10%.
Additional desired experience and skills:
- Active Secret Clearance.
- Master's degree in data science or equivalent from an accredited University.
- Development and application of APIs including REST across multiple types of databases and data types.
- Programming Languages: Python, Java, C++.
- Development of macros in Excel and Word.
- Ability to create clear and compelling data visualizations using tools like MATLAB, Tableau, Power BI, or Plotly.
- Develop or use APIs (e.g., REST) across multiple heterogeneous database types and data categories.
- Experience with data mining and use of Graph databases (e.g.,Neo4j, MarkLogic).
- Experience with IBM DOORS NextGen and developing scripts for DOORS NextGen/use of DOORS NextGen API and Dassault's Cameo Systems Modeler.
- Experience working within an Agile (Kanban, Scrum) environment.
- Experience with SySML or UML and JavaScript.
