Northrop Grumman is seeking 2026 Summer Intern - Business and Operational Sustainability for an internship opportunity. This position will be located at our Space sector in Redondo Beach, CA. May also consider candidates in Gilbert, AZ; Baltimore, MD; Promontory, UT; Dulles, VA.

The qualified candidate will become part of Northrop Grumman's Space Sector Sustainability team in support of the operational and execution teams of our very diverse business portfolio. The team's focus is to identify new investments, changes in processes and management of resources that will make the business more competitive and efficient, while simultaneously improving our footprint production of greenhouse gas (GHG of all types), utilization of water, and reduction in solid waste to landfill. This includes a portfolio that encompasses businesses of solid rocket motor production, space craft and payload design and production, as well as launch services, among other more niche space related services.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Member of the Space Sector Sustainability Team, leading the strategy and direction to achieve our sustainability goals.
  • Interface with team members across operational divisions and collaborate with engineering, environmental, finance, facilities, manufacturing, and other departments as appropriate.
  • Lead research and analysis on projects designed to optimize operations and improve our sustainability footprint.
  • Write papers and develop briefings that summarize findings and recommendations.
  • Brief leadership and teams on project status, required support, research gaps, and potential costs and resources.
  • Identify trends in data sets, pinpoint outliers, and follow up with appropriate investigations.
  • Collaborate with other interns on individual and group projects, and provide recommendations to enhance their integration with sustainability initiatives.
  • Conduct research to identify suppliers or partners supportive of our operational and sustainability goals.
  • Develop training materials, procedures, or other guidance to support summer projects.
  • Participate in site visits, equipment analysis, facility tours, and other on-site activities to observe, inquire, and offer efficiency recommendations.
  • Perform scientific analysis and research alternative materials to improve our sustainability posture.


Basic Qualifications

A candidate must meet ALL of the below criteria. The candidate must:
  • Be a student who is enrolled full-time and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited college/university and will be enrolled full time in Fall 2026.
  • Be majoring in Sustainability or related field.
  • Be available to work full-time (40 hours per week) for at least 10 weeks during summer 2026.
  • Be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite), as determined by the company to meet its business needs (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite)
  • Completed at least three years advanced studies/work related to sustainable business operations, green engineering, sustainability, sustainable finance, or other related degree fields.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Have an overall cumulative GPA of 3.00/4.0 or higher
  • Interest in systems thinking, continuous improvement, sustainability, training development, communications, prior work in manufacturing environment


Intern Pay Range:

Bachelor's: $16.00 to $$33.50 per hour

Master's: $23.25 to $42.25 per hour

At Northrop Grumman, our internship pay rates are standardized and take into account three main factors: the anticipated graduation date of the individual, the cost of labor of the geographic location, and whether the internship is considered technical or administrative.
