Blue Rose Consulting Group, Inc. (Blue Rose) is seeking a Principal Data Engineer to lead a federal modernization program transforming how the Department of Education integrates, scales, and activates data across the enterprise.
This is a high-visibility role for a hands-on data architect and builder - someone capable of designing and engineering large-scale, high-performance data platforms that process billions of records and drive real-time analytics and decision-making. You'll lead the design, development, and optimization of Databricks-based data infrastructure, enabling advanced analytics, AI, and data-driven transformation at national scale.
What You'll Do
As a Principal Data Engineer, you will:
- Architect and build large-scale data pipelines in Databricks, integrating multiple complex data sources across systems and clouds.
- Design and optimize ETL and data transformation processes for performance, scalability, and cost efficiency.
- Implement real-time data streaming solutions using Apache Kafka and related technologies.
- Engineer end-to-end data solutions that unify operational, transactional, and behavioral datasets into analytics-ready models.
- Design and maintain secure, resilient architectures leveraging AWS cloud-native services and infrastructure best practices.
- Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and developers in an Agile environment to deliver mission-critical solutions.
- Introduce automation, data quality frameworks, and observability tools to improve reliability and operational excellence.
- Lead and mentor junior data engineers, promoting engineering standards and continuous improvement.
- Full-time (40 hours/week)
- Hybrid in Washington, D.C.; support during East Coast business hours
- Salary: $160,000-$180,000
- U.S. Citizenship required (Dual Citizens acceptable)
- Public Trust clearance required or higher
- Minimum of 12+ years of professional experience in data engineering, architecture, or large-scale data platform development
- Demonstrated Expert to Master-level (10+ years) experience with:
- Data Engineering
- Databricks Unified Data Analytics Platform
- Apache Kafka
- AWS Architecture
- Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) frameworks
- Proven success leading enterprise-scale data platform initiatives with measurable impact (e.g., performance gains, cost reduction, automation improvements)
- Strong multi-language proficiency in Python, SQL, and one or more of Scala, Java, or Go
- Experience with Spark, Airflow, Glue, Snowflake, or Redshift highly desirable
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills
- Architect data platforms that will redefine how federal agencies use data to drive education policy and strategic outcomes
- Collaborate with elite technical teams on mission-critical modernization programs
- Hybrid flexibility with a focus on innovation, impact, and enterprise-scale transformation
