POSITION OVERVIEW:

We are seeking an experienced Engineer specializing in telecommunications and radio communications to lead and support the engineering, installation, and lifecycle management of critical aviation voice systems and telecommunication infrastructure across the National Air Space (NAS). This exempt-level role emphasizes independent judgment and technical leadership, with a focus on voice switches, remote air-to-ground radio systems, and related operational networks. The engineer will contribute to NAS modernization initiatives through design validation, site integration, acceptance inspections, and system certifications.

**Requires greater than 70% travel**

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Engineer, lead, and execute installations, modifications, and optimization of voice switching systems, radio infrastructure, and telecommunications equipment at remote and nationwide air/ground facilities.
  • Perform system integration, diagnostic assessments, and performance evaluations to ensure operational reliability and compliance.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and technical teams on modernization efforts, site surveys, preventive maintenance plans, and upgrade initiatives.
  • Ensure alignment with applicable FAA regulations, quality standards, and safety protocols during engineering and field activities.
  • Generate detailed engineering documentation, including reports on system status, site readiness, installation specifications, and certification results.
  • Respond to complex outages and technical anomalies requiring onsite engineering support, often under time-sensitive conditions and extensive travel.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field; alternatively, an associate's degree with 7+ years of progressive engineering experience in aviation infrastructure may be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years of direct experience in telecommunications systems engineering, with specific exposure to FAA voice systems such as VSCS, RCAG, and RCO.
  • Demonstrated expertise in RF systems, network integration, and voice switching technologies.
  • Ability to navigate challenging field environments (including tower climbing and adverse weather) and apply engineering judgment under dynamic conditions.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license, U.S. citizenship, and be eligible for a security clearance (includes background check and drug screening).
  • Willingness to travel extensively (>70%) and work flexible schedules, including weekends or holidays based on system demands.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and leadership skills, with a demonstrated ability to work independently across multiple sites and teams.

Physical Demands:

This position requires physical capabilities consistent with senior-level field engineering work in support of federal aviation infrastructure. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and kneel for extended periods during site assessments and equipment installations
  • Ability to climb ladders, towers, and elevated platforms up to 100 feet using fall protection equipment
  • Ability to lift and carry tools, components, and diagnostic equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights while performing detailed technical tasks
  • Ability to travel long distances by car or air to reach remote or nationwide sites
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow)
  • Ability to adapt to variable work schedules, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on operational needs and emergency response requirements

Working Conditions:

This role supports FAA telecommunications and radio systems across the National Airspace System (NAS) and involves dynamic field environments with leadership responsibilities.

  • Frequent travel (>70%) to FAA facilities, transmitter/receiver sites, and telecommunications hubs across the U.S.
  • Exposure to outdoor and elevated work environments, including rooftops, towers, and remote terrain
  • Work in secure federal facilities and restricted-access areas, requiring adherence to safety and security protocols
  • Oversight of team-based projects in field conditions, including mentoring and technical supervision
  • Flexible work hours and short-notice deployments in response to system outages, certifications, or scheduled upgrades
  • Compliance with federal safety standards, including use of PPE, fall protection, and RF exposure guidelines
  • Participation in background checks, drug testing, and security clearance processes as required by contract terms
