Job Position: AIX Systems Engineers
Duration: Full -Time Role
Location: Mclean, VA (2 days per week onsite)
Client: US Navy
We are seeking AIX Systems Engineers to lead the migration of critical applications and system workloads from IBM AIX platforms to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) as a staging point for deployment into an AWS cloud environment. This role involves in-depth discovery of legacy configurations, system-level analysis, scripting, re-platforming, and technical coordination across DB2, middleware, and security teams. Engineers must have a track record of delivering successful legacy-to-Linux migrations in secure enterprise environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct in-depth discovery and inventory of AIX-hosted applications, services, startup scripts, crontabs, and dependencies.
Architect and execute lift-and-shift or partial re-platforming strategies to transition workloads from AIX to RHEL.
Package and migrate binaries, shared libraries, system scripts, and job schedulers with functional parity.
Work closely with DB2 administrators to ensure compatibility and integrity of co-hosted data services during platform migration.
Use NetApp snapshot or image-based backups, combined with Q Replication or other tooling, to support delta state migration as needed.
Assist cloud engineers in preparing the RHEL environment for EC2 deployment, including OS hardening and AWS Systems Manager integration.
Conduct functional validation of all migrated services in RHEL, including service daemons, environment variables, and user access.
Document all configurations, compatibility notes, and rollback strategies as part of the migration runbook.
Required Qualifications:
8+ years of hands-on experience with IBM AIX, including LPAR configuration, NIM, LVM, and system performance tuning.
3+ years of experience migrating workloads from AIX to RHEL or other Linux distributions.
Strong shell scripting skills (KornShell, Bash) and familiarity with automation of system tasks.
Experience analyzing and migrating complex middleware or DB2-integrated applications hosted on AIX.
Familiarity with backup and snapshot tooling (e.g., NetApp, rsync, mksysb) used in migration workflows.
Knowledge of AWS as a target environment (especially EC2, EBS, SSM, and VPC networking).
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience supporting federal system migrations or compliance-bound infrastructure.
Knowledge of AWS as a target environment (especially EC2, EBS, SSM, and VPC networking).
Knowledge of AWS-native services used to replace legacy capabilities (e.g., replacing cron with EventBridge + Lambda).
Experience collaborating with security teams to align OS configurations with NIST 800-53 or RMF controls.
Red Hat certification (e.g., RHCSA/RHCE) or equivalent Linux system administration credential.
